I love them.  I gave up on them as I usually chased them mid october and early November.  Those dates are out when I am in my hunting mode.

Fly rod or gear slinging?  I watched a guy at the Hoodsport Hatchery once using whole herring, he would reel in, snout hook a herring and pitch it out into the herd, and immediately fight another one.  He was having a blast.  I used to fish chummies up in BC.  You just about have it to yourself any day of the week.  Seems the locals don't care much for them.  (Harrison river).

Fly for me and I used to fish the Harrison.  Mostly the Vedder.   I can't think of the other rivers I fished right next tot he Harrison.  All Fraser fish I believe.     I like to deaddrift chum candies.  Lots of fair hook ups.

Oh yeah.  I used to stand there catching fish after fish, wondering why I was the only one there.  I fished the Vedder a lot too.  I use a 10 wt up there, and seemed to catch fish on anything bright and small.  Big fun!  My friends from Chilliwack took me to the Thompson a few times, that is an awesome river.  You may like the little town of Spence's Bridge.  Bighorn sheep come down into town.  I caught a 25+ pound steelhead in the Thompson.  Fish of a lifetime!  I hear the runs are WAY down lately on the Thompson.

The Canadians despise chum and are all after "Springers" or Coho which hold in completely different water.  Its way different than it is fishing rivers down here like the Wallace, Sky etc.

Thompson, Dean, Babine....all dream stealhead waters.   I spent the night outside Smithers and just drooled over all the country.

Chums are always fun to catch and make pretty good smokers when not too dark. Most of the rivers were closed for chum this year in northern washington due to over netting by the tribes the last few years. I guess chum eggs are worth alot of money and get exported as caviar  :(

i used to love fishing for chums, because you'd hook into a lot of fish and there wouldn't be a lot of people around.  now it's more like steelhead, fewer fish and tons of people.  i'd be willing to bet there's more guys on the nisqually "fishing"(most are flossers) for dogs than there are down at blue creek steelhead fishing right now.

Should do it here sometimes, we used to catch them after duck hunting in AK, fun and great fighters especially for the kids to hook into..

Minter...    Was there a ton of snagging Russians down there when you were fishing?   Went down there with a friend and his 8 yr old son.  Had a blast, but the Russians are sure pushy folks.  One ripped so hard to snag a chum he hit a dude with the 1 once weight in the face and there were words.  Then the Russian left when the dude started dialing on his cell phone.  In fact, about 15 of them left.  I figured they did not have a license or a punch card.

Fished the Skagit for Dollys last week. Was floating through a section and had a bobber down. Came up on a 20lb chum. Landed him on a 5 wt Winston, only had to chase him 3/4 of a mile.
