Here goes my attempt to start a thread for my muzzy bull elk hunt. If any of you have followed 6X6 in his quest for a bull then stop reading now. This story will not be the poetry that he spilled out onto the pages. However, I think it will be a good one. Ever since I got this tag I have been dreaming about putting an elk on the wall. I have only killed one elk in the past and that was a cow with my bow. Don't like the crowds so haven't given elk much effort unless I get drawn. I had 11 points so that tells you how long it has been since I hunted elk. I've done some scouting in different areas and thought I had a pretty solid plan for the opener. The snow hit, which is what I wanted but seemed to neglect the fact that with the snow also comes snow mobiles. I'm sure the elk are in my spots but just hiding a bit more. I had been in contact with 6X6 through the past few months and ended up meeting up with him on one of my last scouting trips. It was a pleasure meeting him and he went above and beyond the sportmanship I had expected. Let's just say if/when I score, I may owe him my next child. It was fun watching him do his nightly dance with the elk, he was close but didn't notch his tag until two days later. I leave tomorrow with the help of my brother-in-law and maybe my dad. Hope you enjoy.

Ya Charlie, I read it in a "SHAPE" mag at work. Had a pic of J-Lo on the cover. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Good Luck on your hunt, and if the bull of your dreams doesn't hit the ground. Not a thing to worry about because any bull will be a trophy. Just have fun and do the tag proud, that is all you can do. The rest is up to the elk gods, I hope they are smiling for you on the hunt.
-
good luck, we'll be rootin' for ya!

-
Good luck and have fun. Can't wait to see some pictures.
-
Good luck! This is gonna be a good read!
-
300 you may want to bring a snowmobile to get up into the woods. All the roads are closed for grooming for the year. If I had the tag I would be using one. All the good spots you need one to get into. That is why people aren't really successful on this hunt. My words of wisdom for your hunt is. Bring a snowmobile. Good luck to you. If you need a hand packing give me a shout.
-
Good Luck 300. We will all be eager to read your posts. Kill a big one

good luck

Seein' anything??
-
Beautiful day. No shots fired today. No snow mobile here so relying on contacts and boot leather. Had a six point that was missing his left antler in range but passed on him. Expecting a foot of snow tonight. Not sure what that will do??
-
good luck!
-
Good luck, can't wait to see pics of your succesfull hunt!!

Land of monster bulls!!! i wish i was hunting right now!! Congrats and have fun. I have seen some great bulls in the area the last couple weeks. Good luck!
-
300WSM looks like you are still at it, I ran into one of your hunting partners today. Wow what a snow storm!!! Hope you get your bull!!
-
I bet after the snow yesterday you are wishing you had a sled. Seeing anything good?
-
This snow should have finally kicked them off the top. I couldn't believe how man deer and elk were still up.
-
Piggybacking this thread here.
No bull to go after, but I have a cow-elk hunt coming up next saturday thru Jan 9th. I drew a tag for it.
Any advise for the area is appreciated. I was up a couple of weeks ago looking it over and did get one farmer to give me permission to hunt his place, but more places the better.
Thanks,
-
Best os luck! Hope you get a big boy.

No luck yet, I am home today to take care of family and business. The area I've been concentrating on received a lot of pressure so the bulls are not moving thru like they had been. My bro-in-law split up for about ten minutes yesterday and he kicked a 5X6 out it's bed. Said he watched it for a minute at 50 yards before it took off. :bash: I'm going to hit it hard for the rest of the week. I think the foot of snow that would have helped is gone or at least melted, then re-frozen, making a stock almost impossible. I do have a local taking me up on snow mobiles later this week so looking forward to that. Heading back in the mornig to give it another go round.
-
Stick with it!
-
Keep it up, sure hope you find a good one!!! :hello:
-
Good luck 300wsm! Take lots of pics!
-
I have heard of one really good bull taken already. good luck. Keep after it you will get a good one.
-
no updates? I take it your not seeing much? I know the snow has been pretty crunchy.
-
I was soooo close today. Tomorrow is the last day. The crusted snow has been killing me. Was really close on a 350 bull tonight. He is going to be in the same area tomorrow morning so everybody say an elk hunters prayer for me tonight.
-
good luck and take your camera!!!
-
God bless the elk hunter! I hope you fulfill your dream.
-
May the wind be in your face, your powder stay dry and your aim be true!

any word if a bull was taken?
-
He's probably skinning him out still. Give it time!
-
Sorry to say it's tag soup for me. I'll post more tomorrow.
-
Sorry to hear that. You will get one next time!
-
Yeah, tag soup is quite bitter. :'( But just like anybody who eats there tag, you try to look at the positives of the hunt. I don't regret passing on the first bull, the first couple hours of the hunt because I would have missed out on so much. Through this hunt I met some truly great people. 6X6 is one of them, another is a guy who without ever meeting me, took me up on snow mobiles and showed me some amazing country without expecting anything in return. I know where I will try and get my first cougar, turkey hunt and when I get drawn again, a bull. I also had a great time with friends and family. Next time I will spend a lot more time with my muzzle loader and practice shots out to 200 yards so when the opportunity presents itself I will have the confidence to make the shot. I had too many variables for me to pull the trigger on the second to last day. 200 yards, broadside with a little brush/thickets, and only practiced out to 100 yards, made the shot unethical to me so I chose not to pull the trigger. I do have a picture cemented in my head of that bull. Not sure if that is good or not. A funny thing happened on Saturday. I got a call from a warden, he asked me if I wanted money or points. I had turned in a guy that took a deer illegally. Of course I said points, he then asked if I wanted them to go towards deer or elk? Without hesitation I said elk. Maybe my karma was built up by not launching one at that elk??? Anyway, not sure when I will be hunting bulls in the Teanaway again, but it may be sooner than expected.
-
kudos for not taking a shot that you were unsure of....that is the epitome of sportsman. hats off to you!
-
you are lucky to get points from turning in a poacher, I took pictures of a truck and the kid that shot a deer after dark and turned over the spotting scope he had hid under a stump. Also had statements from 2 neighbors that also heard the shot at night, NO points for me. The game warden tried but the kid said he shot it right at dark, so it turns out to be ''he said, he said''. unless he confesses they can't do squat. Sorry about the tag soup, but like you said you will have a much better chance next time. good job.
-
Im new here, but its good to hear there are still ethical hunters left in this world. Some times its better to eat tag soup, than to know you may have possibly wounded an animal and not able to find it.
-
Way to get after it 300wsm! I commend you on not taking the shot you weren't comfortable with! Really happy about the points too. Maybe you will get to go after that big bull again next year. From what I hear things have gotten pretty tough there and the rifle hunters aren't seeing much.
-
Good job passing up that shot. After shooting a couple bulls under a hundred yards with a muzzleloader, and my buddy losing one this year at 50 feet, I wouldn't take a two hundred yard shot unless it was wide open for a long damn way!
-
Good for you on not taking a 200 yard shot with your muzzleloader. I've heard of people shooting animals that far, but to me, that is way too far for any muzzleloader. It's like taking a 1000 yard shot with a 30-06. Just no way a shot that far can ever be justified. Hopefully the extra 10 points will help in drawing the same permit in the not too far away future.

:rockin: Good job in turning the SOB in.
-
sorry to hear you didn't nail a big one. No pic's from the hunt?
-
Yep sorry you got to eat some tag soup. But its better to have not taken the shot. Every year i meet more and more people that will take bad shots with there archery equipment just because the arrow will go a hundred or so yards or muzzy doesnt mean you do it. I could have shot at some nice bucks at 60 yards with my bow but didnt. They where really nice bucks to. Good Job.
-
Good luck on your next hunt and kudo for not taking an unethical shot at your bull. Next year!?!
;)
