Title: December, 1 2010 slick head BT + gutless method
Post by: AKBowman on December 12, 2010, 09:56:59 AM
I posted some pics of this hunt on my cell a few weeks ago but I finally figured out how to resize my pics so these are from my camera.

I hiked into my area on a wednesday afternoon about 2:30. I put out a salt rock and moved my trail camera to another trail (with the salt rock) in order to try to see if a certain deer made it through gun season. I found a good spot to hang my stand as well.

After moving the cam I hiked back up to the logging rd and still had an hr or so before dark. I decided to hike another 3/4 of a mile or so into a cut that I had seen decent sign in a few weeks prior. I dropped my pack up top and eased my way down into the timber on the edge of the cut which overlooked a ravine and deep bowl that was cut up good with trails/rubs.

I had been sitting about 2 minutes when I looked to my right into the cut and caught deer movement about 30 yards away on my elevation. Deers head was down feeding so I reached for my bow which was at my feet (I was sitting on my butt). Deert caught the movement and picked its head up. I saw it was a big deer but a doe. I kind of ignored her and glassed the surrounding areas really hard for the next 10 minutes looking for a buck or fawn. She moved her way uphill from me and into the open. No buck, no fawn, no meat in the freezer yet and a big fat doe standing at 25 yards quartering away...uhhhh yeah.

I would like to say I made a perfect shot but I was sitting on my butt at full draw trying to shoot under one pine bow and over another one. I ended up shooting her way back in the hips and getting the femoral artery. She expired in 75 yards or about 40 seconds.

Nice job AKB. I  boned my first without gutting this year. Usually I gut them then bone them since I never shoot anything even close to a road. The only tricky part is cutting the tenderloins out.

I realize this guy may not even be in a state where it's required, but I always wonder.

In Washington packing the head out of a buck works. But for a female you either leave the head attached to a quarter or largest portion of the meat, or with the milk bag attached. I don't see how completely boning out a cow or doe would accomplish this. I ask b/c when I see bone out (ya ya :chuckle:) jobs the hide is completely detatched.

I haven't had to worry about this yet, but curious how other folks do it. I can easily see this done with the best intentions but doesn't meet the letter of the law - thought about this after reading the notched tag thread.

What about the heart?  Tell me you don't leave the best part of the deer out there for the coyotes! :EAT:

Yes this was in WA and milk bag attached in this case. If it was a buck I cut the antlers off through the center of the eye sockets and out above the ear hole leaving the hide attached on top of the base. I would assume that would be legit but I've never really read that much into the regs on that.

Heck no! I take the heart and liver out of every critter I shoot. I really love liverworst and the heart goes into the hamburger pile. To get the heart out you open the membrane that seperates the guts from the vitals, without puncturing any organs and you can reach up near the base of the lungs and sever the main arteries and the heart comes rigt out. The liver is in plain view as well and easy enough to get to.

As for the tenderloins after getting the rib meat out between the ribs I cut the top of the ribs (where they meet the spine) If it is a fresh kill you can reach up under the spine and feel for the end of the tenderloin. You can cut that close to the tendon and just pull the tenderloin away from the spine until you get to the base of the muscle. Then cut as close as you can to the base and there you go.

Tenderloin - The last 4 ribs towards the hindquarters are 1/2 length and open at the bottom- just slip your knife under those 4 and you can open up access to the tenderloin - be careful not to cut yourself - there's not much room there.
