I have a Lymann Praire Hunter.The manual says max powder is 90 gr. what is the max powder?

Not sure I understand your question. Are you saying what do they mean by "max powder"? Max powder (or maximum) is the most powder you can use in that gun, which in this case is 90 grains (by volume, not weight.) Doesn't the manual explain all that? It also depends on the bullet weight. The heavier the bullet, the less powder you can use.

I am new to muzzle loading, so i guess I'm lost.I shoot a 275 gr conical with 90 gr of powder.The question is for better range what and how do I find out what bullets and powder to use?

That should be more than enough powder with that bullet to get all the range you need. The maximum range I feel comfortable shooting is limited more by my ability to shoot with open sights than by the bullet and powder I use. Currently I am using a 330 grain bullet with 100 grains of Triple Seven and this is with a 54 caliber, so that's about equivalent to 90 grains in a 50 caliber.
Is that 275 grain bullet a Barnes? If so, that's a good bullet. But if it's anything else that is too light, in my opinion. But with that weight bullet and 90 grains of powder you should be able to shoot out to 100 yards with no problem.

Max means maximum. In black powder rifles, the gun will only burn as much powder as it needs to get the bullet out of the barrel. Any more will exit the muzzle unburned. In the old days of black powder men would shoot over snow to see how much powder was needed. Black flecks on the snow in front of the shooter was unburned powder, and meant valuable powder was being wasted. modern gunmakers have worked this out for you, thus the charts with load data in the manual. Best to experiment with loads to see what gives you the best accuracy. High velocity doesn't mean high accuracy.

Thanks guys for the info.As I read my manual there no chart just what the max is.It will be fun to play with differnt bullets and power.Besides I need the practice :chuckle:
