Title: Newbie
Post by: mattfromtenino on December 18, 2010, 10:46:17 AM
I've been tolling around this site for a while now.  Thought I would try a post.  Bought a used bow from a co-worker  This fall will be my first try at archery hunting.  I'm really excited and can't wait. Any advice or tips are more than welcome.

The best advice that I could give is don't expect this to be easy. Be patient. Don't ever think that you getting an animal is more important than, possibly, wounding and not finding an animal. Don't take shots that you "think you can make". Know your limits.

Homework and practice! I don't bow hunt but it's just like the rest just harder to get in range..... lots of fun though! enjoy and keep us posted on your progress  :hello:

very good advise ,and like everyone else has said practice but the only thing i have to add is dont just fling arrows at a target. make your practice productive when you start getting tired put the bow down because it will cause bad habits. welcome to archery it is the best sport out there 3-d shoots are around the corner and they are a blast. good luck

Shoot, shoot, shoot...........when you think you've shot enough, shoot some more.  You've received alot of good advice.  One thing I'll add, unless I missed it, is don't practice beyond fatigue.  When you feel tired or you start to shake when you draw or hold, hang it up for the day.  Have patience and be consistent.  It'll come around.  Good hunting, TC66.

:yeah: They can also help tune your bow and several other important things to make sure it's ready to take out in the woods.  I would definately take it to a pro-shop.

Agree with all the above. I would also add 1) get a range finder and use every day. guess a yardage to something and then range it. you will find the more you do this the closer you will be at guessing- it will help you when you have a game animal too close for all the movement of pulling out the rangefinder. 2) while practicing, I found that my groups and accuracy was drastically better by putting my thumb on the back of my neck while shooting. It took some getting used to I'll admit but it does make a huge difference. good luck and welcome to the site
