Looks like The Lemondog crew is headed for a Montana Deer hunt in November. Just pulled up the site and checked "Sucessful" was the word I was looking for and that is what we got! Looking for any good input as we don't have a set spot picked out. Good luck to you all!
-
Congrats LD!!!
So with so many of us drawing tags I'm curious what each of you expect this year and what are you holding out for?
-
congrats lemondog. make sure you take lots of pics for us homebodies.
some of you guys should charter a bus. there's enough wa guys going there ought to be a carpool :chuckle:
-
No kidding, I think half of this site will be over there. Should be some great photos and stories come the end of November.
I do wish that MT was a little more friendly to us out of staters who pay the big money. Ten % of the permits is weak!!! You can't even put in for a bunch of them. >:(

2008 GENERAL - BIG GAME COMBO (Party #3540)
SUCCESSFUL
I guess Montana is the place to be this year.
-
340 class bull 180 class mule deer for me this year. I think that is what I will be looking for. ;)
-
Congrats Dan. If this dam weather ever improves we are due for a hike. I hope you do try that area we talked about, I'd like to see what's hanging around there this year.
-
I will be out there with my camera and maybe a doe tag unless I get lucky with the alternate list. I seen about 25 bulls last year.
-
Go for an antelope tag at least.
-
Anybody know how the Antelope hunting is around Lewis Town or the Judith River :dunno:
-
300 Class 6point with the bow, and a 180 class Muley with the rifle, Im gonna do my damdest to uphold these goals
-
My goals will be just short of that, 300 bull and a 170 buck.
-
my goals are a six point bull and a buck of at least 140150...
any six point bull is fine by me. unlike my clients, im not too worried about the score
-
A decent buck and gonna put in for a goat tag.
-
and if your ever in darby, mt stop by the sawmill bar.. if im there, i'll buy you a beer.
-
mountianwalk... dumb queston but I gotta ask. If I didn't apply for the combo tag with my group :bash: can I just buy a general buck tag? I went back with my brother in law last year in oct. and was able to buy a wt doe surplus tag.
-
No, all NR buck tags must be applied for, at least for general......maybe even landowner tags, that one I'm not sure about.
-
dang it!! thanks bone.I was hoping to go chase some of those big bucks a saw last year with my bow... oh well I guess theres always next year
-
oh well I guess theres always next year......
That was my saying for 4 years for MT. FINALLY
Now its my saying for Washington :)
-
Bone,
Well I would tell ya good luck but by looking at some of the pics you posted on another thread luck isn't what you need ...just the tag :chuckle: I've been bow hunting on the eastside for about 6 yrs now with a little success (cows) I should get my any bull tag this year ( 4points now). And hopfully get into some of the backcountry and hear some bulls bugle
-
I'm going to hold off for at least a decent 4-pt. I hunt way over in unit 7 where a 130 is a nice buck for us. When I lived in the Midwest, it was an easy drive. We have got access to some private land over the years. Plus we also antelope hunt and it makes a good combo hunt. My dad comes from WI so it's kinda half way between us. Plus there's doe tags available.
Which begs the question, what regions do you all hunt and why? My reasons are the above. I may hold ontp my Deer A tag and hunt the west side of the state in mid-late November.
-
unit 250..why? its the ony one i have hunted.. but i know parts of it very very well.. my boss has got a missouri river breaks bull tag.. wow! i would love to get down around the bear tooths and do some unlimited zone sheep hunting if i ever find a pard with some sand
-
Mountain,
Is that an area that you have to apply for a special permit? That's down south of Missoula if I recall.
-
regarding what area? 250, the breaks or the sheep zone?
-
Congratulations Lemondog! I envy all of you guys heading for Montana! Best of luck and post them pics!
-
We hunt unit 6 on private land. Plus going to try and get a goat tag this year and maybe grab a doe tag.
-
and if your ever in darby, mt stop by the sawmill bar.. if im there, i'll buy you a beer.
Been there :brew: but if I go that way this year I will definately stop and take you up on it.

Are you kidding me? I hunt region 7 and wont even look at 170 class buck until the last day. Try the block management system, or talk to the biologists, the deer are there NRA, take a look at these, all from region 7. Maybe your talking whitetail?

Huntnphool, Are you on BLM, Block Managment or someones ranch?

I can't wait to get over there and shoot a 170 buck on the 1st day. That's a nice block you hunt. ;)
-
huntphool theres no deer inregion7 only antelopes ;) lots of public land and block management but im telling you its not worth the drive :bdid:wish i was going back there did not get drawn for 2nd year in a row :'( kram
-
Huntnphool, Are you on BLM, Block Managment or someones ranch?
Both. I am fortunate enough to have 24000 acres of some of the best deer hunting in the state to hunt, owned by a friend, but we do hunt public land around there as well, in fact 2 of those bucks we took last year were on public land and several of those bucks in the pics we passed on were on public land. I was really hoping to drag M-Ray, kicking and screaming, over there this year to help cull the numbers :chuckle: but the guy just needs some better Karma or something, he couldn't draw a tag if he took a art class :yike: Sorry Mark couldn't resist, love ya brotha ;)
-
Come on now do have to kick a guy when he's down? :nono:

Well your still invited, I can always use a good strong spotter to help pack out my animal :chuckle:
Lets hope you draw next year, after all what are the chances I draw again
-
I think thats a trick question. :chuckle: :chuckle: after all what are my changes of drawing again next year.

I don't know....he does pretty good drawing tags in this state. ;)
I'm with ya though M_ray.....I couldn't even draw this year and I put in for a landowner tag.

Region 7 must be a hell of a lot different than the central areas. I did not see harvested by anyone, including our group any muleys over 170", though we did see maybe 1-2 on private land pushing that big. The average muley buck in the central is 3-4 point 18-22". I think we saw a higher percentage of large whitetails in the cental area (Region 4-5). Our largest was 150-155". We were somewhat plagued by weather last year, quite a few deer we saw, we just couldn't evaluate well with blowing snow and low clouds over 1/2 the trip.
Criminy Huntinphool, your not old enough to have a personal pack-mule!! :chuckle:
-
Well the areas we hunt are the same Guy Eastman hunts, if you ever watch the show or look at the magazine. Have you ever seen him or his dad tag anything over there less than 170? Probably happens every once in a while but not too often. I think most of you know I'm generally pretty close when scoring animals and if anything tend to estimate on the lower side. Being primarily private land does help the animals grow to older ages and the minerals they need for large antlers is not lacking either. Combine those 2 and you have the making for some pretty good hunting. My friends lease their property to a outfitter and he charges $5,500/person for deer, there is a reason he can charge that and its because the hunter has a realistic chance of seeing a 170+ buck. Now all that being said, your right, it is a very long drive and not worth the ga$, so please continue to concentrate in the central units :chuckle:
-
:chuckle: I did see that area on the Eastman show. Think Zumbo hunted there a couple times too.
-
Thanks for having my back Muleyslyr I don't know :dunno: what he's talking about I drew Elk last year, the desert archery a few years ago, and 2 LE tags in Oregon as well :dunno: he just likes to give me $hi+!
-
Sh.t M_ray.....If I could hunt 170" class bucks 8 out of 11 years, I think I'd be givin' you sh.t too. :chuckle: Just make sure he keeps that invite of his open for when you do draw. ;)
-
I will pretend to M-Ray if you take me :chuckle:
-

Oh yeah I'm sure he will ... and I'm going anyways this year I'm putting in for Antelope and if I have to I'll get a Doe tag and shoot it with my Bow!
-

Good luck with that rougheye thems big shoes to fill! :chuckle: But it looks like if anyone could do it I think you could pull it off :chuckle: ... But be careful of the part where huntnphool trys to tell you I like to rest my head on his lap during the long trip ... that part is :bs:

Now thats some funny $#it right there. Actually Rougheye you would have to be built like that gal shooting her bow someone posted a while back, and a "purty mouth" only works for Mossback91 :lol4: If I dont draw next year and you do I may take you up on that though, it would give me the excuse to go all the way over there again, I can live with just taking pics and guiding. To be honest thats all I had planned this year.
-
I want to know if that hummer was stuck in region seven?

Recieved my tags yesterday, the envelope was not even sealed. Looks like everything that should be there is, but man, you would think they would make sure about things like that.
