I recently got a wirehaired griffon and I have been having a hard time finding out if other people hunt with them often in this state and what good or bad traits they usually carry. I am basically just trying to find any additional help or info before the training really kicks in.

I have had 2 Griffs. The first one we had was a big male that we got when he was 3. He was very gun shy when we got him but my grandpa was able to work with him enough to get over this problem. He eventually became the best bird dog we had ever had. We had to put him down last year and our GWP died a couple months ago. We picked up a rescued Wirehair Pointing Griffon last month. She is a 4 yo and is awesome. These are my favorite dogs. They are great family dogs and are awesome hunters. The rescuer said that she wouldn't hunt but once we got her home she went crazy after the quail. She will point and chase them all day everyday. We are still working with her so we haven't shot any birds with her yet, but she should be a good hunter. Griffons are great dogs and I would highly recommend them. My .02.

Thanks for the info, my pup has one hell of a lot of personality and loves to track anything with feathers, fur or food on its person. I just really hope that his pointing instinct shines through soon.

In 2009 I hunted at Gryphon Ranch on the westside. The owner guided her Griffon for the hunt, and while talking to her I found out she has trained quite a few of them. Anyway, they don't do hunts there anymore, but I believe she still trains dogs and could give advise I am sure. I know their website is still up.....

How old is he 12 gauge watergun? Any photos?

I hunted at the same place on the west side. They held a couple of bird dog challenge events there a few years ago. She ran a couple of her dogs in the tournament and they looked great. Very nice people, I am sure they would help out with any questions you might have.

Awesome! I'll check the website out soon. I have been training every day for about 30 minutes and he is coming along good, except the hard mouthing.

The Griffons are very much like the German Wirehair which I have had the pleasure of owning a few and training as well. They can be taught to hunt closer in range if you preferr that versus just heading out and doing their own thing. Getting them started and force broke right before they get too old is the trick. Making sure you have a real good and steady woe is the most important with this breed. Love the funky look of them.

I am a gun dog trainer in Canada. If your dog has a hard mouth stop working him/her on birds. You need to get your dog force broke to stop that before it gets worse. Force broking the dog can start as early as 6 months old with they have their adult teeth. You also need to get a good woe on the dog which a trainer can help you with as well. You should be able to tell your dog at any time to woe and he should stop in his tracks.
