We plan on going to Yellowstone summer 2012 after my daughters last performance at Missoula Childrens Theater. What would be a good set up for the trip, plus my wife would use it for day to day photogaphy? Me and my wife have never used complex cameras always point and shoot.

I have a really nice setup for all those things in a Canon 50D with a 50mm f1.8 a 17-55mm F2.8 a 55-250 F4-5.6 and a 100mm F2.8 Macro and I rented a 70-200mm F2.8L II so if I added all that up it would be around $4200 give or take a few bucks, now those aren't all the best lenses but they are nice and I have used them for much the same things as you describe. I just got the 70-200mm so I haven't played with it yet but I am sure I will be impressed.
Are you looking for a PAS or DSLR ?? that will determine which type of advice you will get on here !!!
Hope you have fun in Yellowstone !!! ;)

Can't go wrong with a Canon G12. All of the setting that the complex DSLRs have in an exceptional PAS (point and shoot). I learned the technical parts of photography in this amazing take anywhere wonder.
