Title: dead coyotes
Post by: singleshot12 on December 27, 2010, 11:22:09 AM
My brother found a dead coyote in the barn and one out in the pasture. He had put out rat poison in the barn a couple weeks ago and he thinks the coyotes may have eaten the rat poison and died. If so this may be a good way to control coyotes on your property. Also thinking it may not be such a good way and might not even be legal. What are others thoughts on this?

Don't do it. They die of poison, birds of prey or other ccritters eat the carcus n will more likely die of it.

They might have just eaten the dead rats also.  If other animals eat the rats they can die as well.  Poison does not discriminate and can kill your pets and protected wildlife even a couple critters down the line from the one that ate the poison.

Yeah that's what I thought may have happened. I personally don't like to poison anything even plants. Poison seems to always goe through the food chain.

Talked to my vet about that she said it was not possible for a animal that eats a poisoned mouse to die from the poison as it dissipates when digested . I was baiting gophers at the time and worried about the dogs being effected by the poison . Maybe shes full of ---- I dont know for sure but non of my dogs got sick or died , and they eat them danged gophers all the time  :chuckle:

I have my doubts about those coyotes dying from the poison.   I use rat poison all the time in my barn and it kills them dead.  When I run out I see mice running all over the place and go get some more bars of the mouse poison.  I've caught my stupid dog eating one of those bricks more than once and he don't even get sick.  I hide the bricks too but the mice and rats dragthem out in the open and that's when the stupid dog gets them.  I think that rat poison is so weak it won't hardly kill a dog.   Not sure, maybe my dog can eat anything and not die because he pretty much does.  Anthing dead and the older and stinkier, maggot infested, cow manure, human poop or anything he can get down his gullet and he don't ever get sick.  Free choice dog food too but prefers stikey smelley stuff best.

Poison doesn't kill everything because for the different Chem of animals. I believe the older poisons that did have been removed and new one are in there place. It's like a snake cant have tylenol but other animals can. Lots of poisons are broken down in the animal that ate it so there is no chance that it could poison what ever eats it. You would have to figure out what is the poison in your rat poison to see what affects it my have.

When I was about 15 - 16 my buddy and I were running out Brits shooting grey diggers and jack rabbits.  The dogs got into something nasty.  End of story, we had to carry them about a mile back to our parents car for a ride home.  Both dogs passed as we carried them.

dont remember the name of the pesticde, but if your dog walks through a field after they sprayed, the poison is soaked through the paws, and they die quick.
