Title: trapping in Alaska with pics
Post by: TeacherMan on December 28, 2010, 07:45:54 PM
Well its been a while since I posted anything on the forum, I guess I will start with I miss Washington  :chuckle: I bought my trapping/hunting licence when I got to AK so I would have something to do this fall and I have been staying busy. I really have had fun putting some fur up, mostly fox, with a few marten. I put a line out last week that I will be able to leave out for one more week before I pull it, It's total focus is lynx and wolverine with marten as bi catch. I'm trapping in the Cantwell area for those of you that know AK. There is a descent amount of fur in that area, tons of moose (seeing 20-40 a day) this time of year and tons of other people that trap, you can get a trapping licence over the counter in AK.

Anyway the pics that I'm putting on are mostly of sets, a couple animals but I don't take my camera much in the field because the -20 plus weather drains by batteries really quick. The traps that I have been using are 120 conibears, #4 Northwoods coils, #650 MB, and 280 conibears, plus a few snares. It has been an experience trapping in such cold and deep snow, I have to use my snowshoes or I sink up to my neck, no joke. I shot a bunch of grouse last week (15 out of one tree!  :chuckle:) and stepped off the road to get them and was almost over my head. I do have to say that was the best grouse shooting I've ever seen or had. the limit is 15 or 30 depending on your location.

Under each one of my leaning poles I have a #4 or 650. I also put cubbies next to a lot of my leaning poles. just so you know exposed bait in AK is legal.

One of the pics I found of a couple weeks ago, I pulled a couple nice fox off of a cubbie and a lynx urine scent post. The pair was 100yds apart!

The best attractor ever for lynx, I hope! Its a feather boa that you buy in the little girls section of the toy aisle at Walmart. I put them 20yds away from my sets out in the most open spot I can up about 8-10' in a willow so they are really visible. Curiosity hopefully will kill the cat this week.

You can see the marten box behind on the big spruce, it has a MB650 as well under the box with a snowshoe in a root hole behind it, plus some beaver castor and grouse feathers.

The boa's are about 3' long, pink feathers, and have tinsel in them  :chuckle: My daughters got mad that I was using them on my trap line.

Nice sets TM.  I was in Salcha from 92-04 and loved trapping every year.  I still have about 100 snares and one #9 Wolf trap...  Can't seem to part with it.  Maybe move to Idaho one year and start up again.  I shot two nice wolves in 97 in the Cantwell area.  They were feeding on a caribou and you could've washed off the chunks of meat in their stomachs and put it in a slow cooker they were the 2lb chunks for sure!
Enjoy your time up there.

You guys have it pretty good in WA, the hunting is better hands down, that is unless you have $1,000's to spend on transportation to hunt in AK. The problem with it up in my area is EVERYONE!!! hunts, fishes and traps. Not complaining, you just have to work at it a lot harder.

Like I said you can trap over or in this case under an open bait in AK. I have 5 wolf traps, all #5 Bridger's under the hanging wolf hide, next to the lynx carcase, and then over to the side next to a hanging grouse wing. Its like a giant playground for wolves.

This open water is in an area that has been -20 for weeks but for some reason hasn't frozen, the animals are flocking to it. I have a 330 in the main channel.

Can't wait to see some wolf pics!

Like I said this is my first year after wolves, I have a buddy that has got a couple this season but he is interior. I would love to get a couple, they are going around $700 this year, a person could make some good money if they got into a couple packs. A buddy of mine got a wolverine last year and sold it, he skinned it out so it would be mounted and got $900! It was a nice 52 pound male, a giant in the wolverine world.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed but not worried if I don't get one, just being out is the fun part!

Out on my line yesterday, I had to dig my sets out so they could be active again. We got about 30" snow in 24 hours and hold around 28 degrees, way to warm. 150 miles south its 42 degrees. Got my jeep good and stuck at one point, there are 33" on it and snow was coming up onto the hood at one point, and that was just on the flats. I saw a moose in a ditch that was only visible by its head. the snow was over her back. Looked like she was swimming.

I dropped her off at my classroom tonight to see if my students notice her tomorrow. I skinned a couple muskrats out today in Anatomy, kids thought that was cool.

I think your statement about needing thousands is interesting to get to real good hunting.. Kinda makes a trip more reasonable if you are saying it and you live up there.  :twocents: Cool pics keep em coming!

Next season my goal is 25 plus lynx and in the process marten, fox and maybe a wolverine or wolf. I think if I'm able to meet that I will be more than willing to send you some nice taxidermy quality skinned hides for taxidermy credit if your up for up

Teacherman .. nice pictures ... I  sure miss trapping as a kid ... growing up in Pennsylvania  I would run about 100 traps ... most of my trapping was for coon- muskrat- red fox - and alot of grey fox ...I actually bought all my trapping supplies out to Washington to find out trapping was illegal .... Total disapointment .... welcome to Washington ......
