We shot a weird one. Seems a little "Pintail" like but nothing else on the bird seemed to confirm hybrid (at least to me). Any ideas?

Anyway we ended up with:
10 Mallard Drakes
3 Mallard Hens
2 Pintail Drakes
6 Wigeon Drakes
Thanks for looking.

judging by the size and without seeing any other pictures I would wager you capped a domestic duck that got loose.

My uncle raises mallards, adn there so fat that they can barely fly away.
-
sweet job! ha ha yeah it looks like a mallard pintail cross....or maybe just some mutation of bill pigmentation....I would suppose that the mallard phenotype seems to be dominant...unless its just a quarter pinny lol...what color were the pretty wing feathers, sometimes with the crosses they can be really green with not much blue in them? did it have a short pin or a curl?
-
All the tale signs of the bird (feet, wing colors, tail) were ture mallard. I believe it had a double curl, if not triple but was indeed curls and not a sprig.
-
The head looks bigger than a regular green head, so I dont think it has any pintail in it, especially since you said it had all other mallard characteristics. Not sure what it is.

I'm with most everyone else on this.. not exactly sure what it is... but nice work on all the birds! from what it sounds like its just a greenhead the way you described it!

Pintail-Mallard hybrid. That's my :twocents:... http://www.bobsteelephoto.com/Species/mall_nopi.html (http://www.bobsteelephoto.com/Species/mall_nopi.html)

Lack of blood flow, maybe flying just a touch too high :chuckle: Good looking tailgate ;)

Yes it looks similar because of the bill, but he said the rest of the duck is all "mallard" like, meaning it has curls and no sprig, blue speculum, orange feet, ect...

Looks like a mallard drake with a painted bill :chuckle:
