Title: Why do geese do that?
Post by: buglin4bulls on January 08, 2011, 10:31:34 AM
They are flying normal than all the sudden they turn vertical and and dive down a little  :dunno: and multiple do this... Why are they doing this?

They turn sideways to quickly lose altitude.  When the wings are not level they lose lift.  I have seen birds do this to drop more quickly into the dekes but am not sure why they would do that while just flying along.  It is pretty cool watching them do that though.

They also flip and flare to communicate with the flock-it does look sweet, especially when ther're doin it in to your spread!

coolest part about all of this is to see the still pictures of it... the goose's head never changes plane, the goose still looks straight ahead level eyed while the body rotates around the neck basically the wings fill up and let the air push em down and drop altitude at crazy rates

That's one way to tell a taxidermist that does good waterfowl mounts, no matter the angle of the body, the head is level.

I've been told that it is to drop altitude. sometimes geese make a loud popping noise when there are a bunch doing it. I have had Shoveler's drop in on me like that as well pretty cool.
