Howdy..Im thinking of replacing my 20 yr. old 7 mag barrel with a custom bartlein or broughton barrel in 7mm RUM. Ive looked up some ballistic data on the RUM and it appears to be fairly impressive....perhaps 200-300+ fps better (all things being equal) to the 7mm mag.
Anyone own this caliber on this board? If so, do you have any handload data available. Looks like a kickazz round. Thanks in advance.

more FPS from shanging out a barrel?

Not from changing the barrel, but going from 7mm RM to 7mm RUM while changing out the barrel.
Have heard good things about the RUMs, but no personal experience with them.
-
I should say new barrel and of course re-chambering to 7mm RUM. 7 Rem ultra magnum cases are quite large as compared to 7 mag. 90 grains avg. compared to 60 grains+/-.
Someone has to own one here?
-
I had one it went to the pawn shop.... :dunno: It was a rem 700 BDL it was an average shooter at best
I just ordered a 7 STW supposed to be more consistent and its only 100 fps drop from the 7 RUM
-
Were you just shooting factory loads or did you handload for it?

what is a RM or a RUM?
-
7mm remington ultra magnum (RUM) 7mm remington magnum (RM) 7mm STW (Shooting Times Westerner)
-
Hand loads and the one factory offering (1 Box) I tried sciroccos and Barnes bullets.
You might have better luck with a custom barrel that I had. I guess its hell on barrels too.
-
Yah Ive read that as well about barrel life. A good custom barrel may solve some of the issues and keeping loads off the max as well.
-
That you Nels?
-
Thats Nelsy Tony.
Nels, that sucker is a smoker, you can juice em up pretty good handloading too. When you burn the factory barrel out, have er re-barreled and keep on truckin'. Should be a Sitka killin SOB!! Hurry upp and get one, we'll go shootin. Later
-
Yep Tony....er tony7wsm....er 270wsm....lol. Yah its a smoker on paper for sure...hopefullly someone has worked up some loads on this site. Jud, it wont be a factory barrel it will be a krieger or something.... miles separate from the factory barrel..... :chuckle: Im gonna take my old 700 adl 7 mag and re-chamber the action to 7 Rum (if possible) with a custom barrel. Shes gettin old. Need a sitka whacker. Might throw on a Bell/carlson Mountain stock too.
-
JWS over on BTC has a 700, RMEF edition camo,SS 7 RUM. We've been talking about working up a load for it. He's got it at the smiths getting a trigger job done. I think he's going with 168 Bergers with turrets. I'll let you know when he gets it back, give you an excuse to get down here for a day.
-
Sounds good Jud....lookin forward to it as Im pretty green in the ballistics department. Later

I have a 300 RUM and i love it. Very accurate gun and a better killer. The bigger the bullet the better the accuracy is what i have found. They were built to shoot big.
-
Thanks Red Dawg...whats your bullet of choice, powder?
-
200 grain accubond, i cant remember the powder off hand but i know it is IMR. 77 grains of powder, remington brass, federal primers. I think it is near 2900fps. Which i think is perfect for killing. You can definitely make it faster, but i would not.
-
I would definitely do the re-chamber and re-barrel to 7 RUM. That cartridge is a screamer. Or you might think about going up to the 300 RUM, or better yet, the 338 RUM!
-
One of the pards had a 700 Sendero, 300 RUM I used to load for. Rem hulls, 215's, 180 sciroccos', 96 grains RL25, averaged 3460. Had a few over 3500, that is flat ass screamin!! This load shot .5 groups all day long. We should be able to work a little magic with your 7 Nels....
-
I've been eyeing my new Sitka killa Nels, Ultra Lightweight 240, a twin to ole' faithful. Just a excuse to get a new shootin iron. grin....
-
240? Is that a browning :chuckle: That sounds perfect Jud...prolly a screamer as well. Dont need much for them "little" sitkas...lol. Them senderos are heavy ass guns. My bro had the 7 mag sendero....accurate as hell but nothin youd want to pack into the high country. Ready for a new cartridge. I think the 180 bergers in a 7 RUM would run near 3000-3200 fps and be a pretty awesome accurate downrange combination.
-
I want a Sendero just for those times I want to sit all day and watch a big canyon, where a 500 yard shot would be a real possibility. Can't decide if I'd want a 300 RUM or a 338 Rum. But either one ought to do the trick.
-
I just let my stepson pack it around :chuckle: Probably weighed in around 10lbs. That 338 should put a serious smack down on critters.
-
one of the first rifles i bought with my first ak fishing money was a 700 sendero, in 7 ultra mag. the thing was quite a screamer and shot pretty pin-point with 140's. but the thing was too heavy for serious hunting and quite perfectly useless as a serious hunting arm. it still resides in arkansas, which kinda says how much i care for it. i didnt care for the rifle, but the chambering is ok, but i could think of better things to point at bear and elk.
-
ghost, I have a Remington 700 XCR in 7mm RUM and absolutely love this rifle. I don't handload but if you do you're really going to love this caliber. My only knock would be the factory ammo offerings, although I've recently found that there is a factory 160 gr TSX's and Nosler is loading this caliber with 160 gr Partitions!! Those are a couple sweet rounds for a non-handloader like me. I found a bunch of boxes of older remington 160 gr partitions (which they don't make any more) and my gun loves them. 3/4" at 100 yards if I do my part. I've also shot the 150 sciroccos and those things are ridculously flat shooting. I see they are also coming out with the different power level ammo for reduced recoil for the 7 RUM (like they already do with the 300 RUM) although recoil with my rifle is a non factor. It kicks like my 30-06 which I haven't heard too many people say about the 300 RUM. The deer and elk I've seen shot with this caliber have absolutely dropped on the spot. Long story short, no handload info for ya but a definite thumbs up on this caliber!

Bobcat, go with the .300RUM ! Although I havent shot the .338RUM......
