I’m looking for a non-toxic 12 gauge solution to the coyotes that keep sneaking up on my goose decoys; the steel BBs are not very effective.
Any suggestions?

"Dead Coyote" http://www.cabelas.com/shotgun-ammunition-hevi-shot-dead-coyote-ammunition.shtml (http://www.cabelas.com/shotgun-ammunition-hevi-shot-dead-coyote-ammunition.shtml)

How about something cheaper?
-
Cheaper? They're only $3.29 per shot. :dunno: :chuckle:
I guess you don't want the coyotes dead THAT BAD, huh?
-
Any brand of t-shot steel but dead coyote would be alot more effective..you must have herds of coyotes coming into your dekes if you're worried about cost :chuckle:

Maybe not; I’d have to convince myself that shooting a mangy, nasty, piss covered brush dog was a good investment of $3.29.

How are you going to get your shells switched quick enough anyway? Would it be possible to bring a 22 rifle or 22 mag into the blind with you?
-
I usually have plenty of time since I’m in the blind and can see them coming from a distance. The rifle is a good idea but I don’t want pack it out & back.
I usually carry a Glock sidearm but maybe next time I’ll bring a more accurate pistol.

About the same price as Dead Coyote but there is Remington Wingmaster HD also. You can find it on sale sometimes.

12 guage 3 1/2" BBB will kill a dog.

What do you suppose the maximum range would be with that load? I'd guess about 35 yards. :dunno:

Head shot 45 -50 yds. Chest area I probably wouldn't go beyond 40 yds. or you will be putting your second and thirds rounds at him. Remember at 50 yds. you need to aim a little high because of the pellet drop. :twocents:

I will second the "T" shot reccomendation. If i remember correctly T shot is .22 cal shot. Not 100% sure on that but pretty sure...

I killed a yote once with 7.5 shot at 30 yards..........dropped on the spot and was dead instantly. Probably just luck though...........

You'd play hell explaining that to a Game Warden.

Explaining what? Is there a law against having a gun for whatever game mght show up?

Nope. I would probably just use my carry gun for any coyote that showed up.

I could see a game warden trying to accuse him of shooting geese with the 22 rifle if he had it out in the goose blind with him.

Where does it say in the regulations that you can't have a rifle while waterfowl hunting? What about when I'm hunting in September- is it illegal when I have a rifle and a shotgun in my vehicle? I MIGHT shoot a bear with the shotgun!
-
I don't think it does say that anywhere, but you know what will likely happen: He'll be out there shooting geese and then take a few shots during the day at coyotes and someone from a half mile or so away will hear .22 LR shots assume the worst. They will report that they witnessed a goose hunter shooting geese with a .22LR and a WDFW officer will be called out to investigate. The warden will then come out there and accuse him of shooting geese with the .22LR.
So, while not illegal, it could get him in trouble even when doing nothing illegal. Just have to decide if it's worth the potential hassle. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't....... :dunno:
(Probably better to just bring the .300 win mag for the occasional coyote) :)
