Title: Need help with .45acp bullet seating.
Post by: MHWASH on February 13, 2011, 06:48:06 PM
I've loaded a bunch round nose and hps, and ball, but I'm having trouble with these SWCs. I think I may have to seat the bullet band below the case mouth, then roll crimp? Any ideas?

For LSWC you will need to leave the bullet shoulder about 1/16th inch outside of the case mouth.  You will also need to add a taper crimp to about 0.470 inch. When the round feeds, it rides up the ramp on the bullet shoulder, so you need to have some of it outside the case.  If the case isn't crimped, the case mouth can cause a misfeed as well.  The SWC bullet will give you an inherently shorter OAL than ball will so you don't have to worry about it as much.

A good rule of thumb is to have about a thumb nails thickness of bullet out of the case. Then enough taper crimp to remove the bell from the expanding die.

I've messed with the length a fair amount, but still cant seem to get these to chamber all the way. I do have another brand, with a slight different shape that seems to be chambering just fine. Hopefully I'll get a chance to load a few before the weekend.

What brand/model of bullet? H&G 68, Lyman, Lee, Zero, Barry's?

Here's what a loaded Lyman 452460 200gn SWC should look like. Taper crimp, .470" at the mouth. If it won't chamber, then see if the bullet is hitting the end of the chamber. Remember, the 45acp head spaces on the case mouth. Too much crimp and it won't properly. Not enough, and it might not go in. Build yourself some dummy rounds until you get what works. Get with a buddy that's reloaded 45acp successfuly to show you.
