Title: Anybody have a 17 Remington?
Post by: yorketransport on February 17, 2011, 08:36:37 PM
I just picked up a Rem 700 in 17 Remington. Does anybody else have one?

I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I got it for a good price. I figured it was worth playing with for a while and then I can use the action to build something else later on.

A good friend of mine picked one up when they first came out. It's model 700 stainless. He has a sweet 17 scope on it. He's never in state so he leaves it at his parents farm but when he is in town we plink with it a bit. It's a ton of fun to shoot and super accurate. I carried it for coyotes last weekend but never took a shot and the more I research I think I'm taking my .06 next time I go out. I like to reach way out there and I don't think that it will have what it takes but idk, I should give it a chance and see for myself. But for crows, rabbits, and whatever tries to make a nest in the barn it's fun.

I bought a .597 when they first came out. It was a sweet gun. I thought it was way too loud though. Ended up selling it then about six months after I sold it I found out they were recalling them because they were blowing up. Remington would give you like $200 for it or you could send it in and they'd put a .22 mag barrel on it. I really like the .204. If you compare the cost to shoot, there isn't that big of a difference. Anyway, my point is if you are looking for a Remington .17, stay away from the 597's.

They can be a little difficult in the wind, but fun. Nothing like a 20gr bullet at 4400 feet per second.

I think Muleysniper had a 17 HMR, not a 17 Rem.

Muleysniper,
He is talking about the 17 Remington cartridge not the 17 HMR.

The 17 Rem. is a great round for coyotes, bobcats, ground squirrels, etc and very good on pelts. If you reload you can easily get brass for it, I see it at times at Wholesale Sports or what ever Sportsman's Warehouse used to be. However Graff and sons usually has brass and bullets available. That is a smoking round for sure but has been overshadowed as of late by the 204 Ruger round, again another great round. You should really like the 17 Remington, very little if any recoil and deadly accurate.

I actually have a 204 Ruger and I do love it. Those little 32gr V-Max bullets at over 4100fps are something else when they hit a critter, but they deffinately aren't fur friendly :o. Here's a pic of what one did to the last porcupine I shot.

I just imagine a 20gr at 4300fps being even more devistating.

I'll probably shoot the gun until I burn through the 100rds of ammo that I got with it, then decide if I want to keep in as is or try a different caliber.

I've got a Remington 700 in .17 Fireball.  Mainly use it on the bench for ground squirrels.  Don't know how it would do on a coyote, because I missed the only coyote I ever tried to shoot with it.  Same case as the .17 remington, but shorter.  I never figured it out, but by reloading, I think I can shoot it cheaper than a .17hmr.  But I love my .17hmr, so there's no competition there.

Yeah, the 17 Fireball is a necked down .221 Remington Fireball case and it will do a very good job on coyotes also.
