I see a sale for herter's ammo at cabelas anyone use it I know it is steel but how's it shoot?
-
I've run about 500 rounds of it through my new AR-15 this week. It seemed to be doing just fine. Sighting in my scope at 200 yards it was grouping at about 4-5" and the really expensive stuff was about 3". It is fairly dirty ammo. I had to clean my gun after about 100 rounds, but it'll run that first 100 through just fine.

good for range time and cheap blasting but i wouldnt hunt with it or bet my life on it. You can find some brass PMC for just a few more dollars a box if you shop around.

I was looking to just put some rounds away for that rainy day.

Yak, that looks pretty pricey to me although I've never heard anything bad about Herter's ammo, look on Cheaperthandirt for some Brown Bear or something, out of thousands of rounds of non-surplus steel cased stuff that I have fired I've never had even one failure. The 62gr hollow points are accurate through my rifle YMMV.
Todd, if your rifle started having malfunctions after 100 rounds due to being dirty you aren't using enough lube :twocents: AR's like to run wet.

Anybody know of any cheaper out there right now? I got it because it was the lowest price I could find. It goes bang, but wouldn't mind finding 5000 significantly cheaper to stick away for a rainy day.
You're right about needing more lube. Still learning... Part of the problem was having the cheapest mags I could find, and they were brand new. Now that they've been used for a couple of cycles, I haven't had a problem. Also, I paid a few dollars more for some more P-Mags, and they're working perfect. The bolt would get stuck on top of a cartridge that was fed half out of the mag. Don't think that's so much of a gun problem as a mag problem. Like I said, still learning, though.

You're not far from Stevensville Montana are you ? That's where HSM is made. I bought some 223 ammo there and it was cheaper than any place online. I just walked in the door and bought the ammo. Call them and find out if you can still do that.

somebody has some PMC .223 ammo 580 rds for $120 or so in the classifieds

Thanks! But.......
I shot 50 rounds of the PMC stuff to see if I wanted to buy more. The best I could do was 8" groups at 200 yards. I tried; I really did, but it just didn't work for my gun, so I don't have to think about it again.

Ive had nothing but problems with Herters ammo. bought several boxes of .308 and maybe 1 out of every 10 would fire. Primer was hit just fine but nothing. I also bout almost 1000 rounds for my sks, and they tend to get stick in chamber. No problems with any other ammo in it, just the herters.
