I'm putting my 12 year old lab rocky down today. He has been on meds for a few weeks for his week heart but results are going down hill. He has lost almost 20 pounds and stopped eating. The last 2 days his legs have been a bit shaky. So I think it is time. I have to be honest I might cry when I bring him in. I guess I'm a big baby like that.

Hang in there. Yes you might shed a tear or two. We love our labs. I had to take my dad's dog in over Christmas. He's 83 and was very attached to her too. Remember the good times...

Sorry man, one of the toughest things I have ever had to do. I feel the pain. I am 6'8 and cried like a baby in front of my wife and everyone. It is OK.

I agree with Wenatcheejay, there is nothing wrong with crying. Dogs are part of the family and losing one is like losing a family member. Just try and remember all the goods times and things will get better.

Have shed far more tears for the loss of a dog or horse than for most ppl. Tough times, wish you the best.

My prayers are with you. When we took our little coco in I couldn't talk. I cried like a baby, but I held her till she went to sleep. Other than the surprise passing of my mother when I was 30 yrs. old nothing has been harder. Just remember they are not suffering anymore and are thanking you all the way to heaven.

I feel your pain as I type this. Last week on the 13th we took our dog rosie in to pet er. same scenaio, not eating lost weight... After several xrays there was nothing that could be done. I figured we had a few days. I was wrong. That night the look in her eyes said it all. She didnt want to be inside anymore. I put on the carharts and made my self a stiff drink. I laid out back with her for quite some time. We were alble to get her in and monday morning she hung on long enough so I could carry her ina nd my wife make it to say goodbye..... 12 long great years, our first kid! We are still heart broke and 1 week seems like it was yesterday. my 3 year old doesnt understand why she wont come back home, its breaking are hearts.

We're in the same boat and not looking forward to it either.
Been down this road too many times already but can't be with out our best friends.
Our Annie is nearly 13 and starting to have bladder issues although she seems to go in spurts. She still gets around fine although hearing and dementia seems to be issues lately.
Nothing harder than that final ride in the car with an old companion.
Thinking of the good times and letting the water works go seems to work best in the short term.

Had a Golden Lab for 14 years and when the time came I called my sister to take her to the vet. I could not have done it.
You a better man than me.
I still miss you "SANDY" I hope your still running them birds upstairs......

It is done. still can't believe it he went down hill so fast. At least he was still hunting all the way up to December.

Sorry to hear, man. Tough thing to do. I had to put down my lab this year after 16 years. I feel your pain, but it's what you got to do for the best.

So sorry to hear. I have had to put 2 Labs down so far, and I cried like a baby both times. Just know that your dog loved you unconditionally, and it wouldn't be fair to let her suffer. It's the right thing to do, even though it SUCKS! Hang in there.

right thing todo. Mine was the same way..... Im sorry bro.... I accidently called my chocolate the daisy rosie a little while back..... hopefully time heals.... they are fetching birds and eating unlimited biscuits now

i had to put down a loved dog about 6 years ago when i was about 8! i remember my first duck call that i blew with dad and the ones i hunted with when i was that age :) i was given that duck call when i was 5 and that call that i loved got put in chums box after he was creamated it is still in there and will stay in there because he was the reason i loved to hunt with my dad unfortuanatily chum didnt get to see me shoot my first duck but my call will always be with him! Its hard to put down a lab that you love and you were the only thing they had and they loved you! Hang in there your dog is in a better place! Time heals and so do new puppies that you can train love them just as much :)

I just put my springer Dottie down sat. She's sleepin under a big spruce tree in the pasture, I'll b makin her headstone today.

Tearing up just reading your post. Had to put my "Hannah" down just before
Christmas last year due to a heart condition and know just how you feel.
Nothing wrong with a tear or two, it shows you're a strong man, not weak.
May your best friend forever be in your heart.

Worst thing in the world to do, but sometimes it is best. I keep thinking I sould of let my pit live a little longer but the vet and my wife said I did the correct thing. She was the worst dog for me to put down. I lead her to the end. I still have dreams at night where I can swear she was with me in bed. I can feel her short hair, her big red nose etc. Great dog, so loyal... :'(
Go get another pup soon. I told my kids they will inherit a dog when I kick the bucket.

I had a rotty mix nakta when I had to put her down I cried like a babby. I thought I could walk in there and be the big man on the block instead I was the b iggest baby. Still til this day I wonder who cried more me or tyhe wife.

Tearing up just reading your post.
I swear I can't read these posts without tearing up. I'm pretty sure I've cried more over dead dogs in the last 20 years than all other causes combined.

Sorry to hear about your loss... rest assured, you have done the right thing. Be happy for the many years you got to enjoy the friendship. My Suzy-Q was with me for only seven years before cancer took her. Many tears shed and it hurt like hell for several weeks. The greatest thing about it is all of the wonderful memories I now have of her. Brings a smile to my face everytime I think of her. Give it some time and you'll be smiling too while reliving all of those memories.

Hang in there it will get better over time even though it does not seem like it now. I had to put my 15 year old lab down last July, it was so hard packing her into the vet that day and holding her right to the end,even though I knew it was best for her. Many tears were shed for several days. Remember the good times the memories will last forever.

Lost mine 6 months ago -but I know he is in better place waiting for me to return one day -which I will -and then we'll be forever together again. Let time heal your scarred hearth and remember him often .....

I had to put down my girls little puppy about a month and a half ago. Brutal. My golden is about 15 1/2 and getting close to that time. I hate it. I have had him longer than my wife, and he was more popular in college than I was. All of my dogs live on in my memory and hold a special place, as will yours.
At the top of this board is a memorial to our best friends. If you are up to it, add your dog and share a thought or two about them.

Thats the catch-22 with dog ownership. Since they dont live long you get to have multiple experiences with pups and old dogs... but then... you have to let them go.
I've got a 13 yr old that I cant imagine going much more than a year, even though he is doing great now..... :'(
