Title: Buckshot and choke question
Post by: fishermanjoe on February 24, 2011, 04:30:35 PM
I was wanting to use my nova 12g for coyote hunting yesterday but when I tried to put my modified choke in it would not fit. I remember when i was taking it out it was a little tight but now it will go in about half way and stop. The other chokes i have are turkey super full and a carlson's mid range blackcloud  choke. The turkey choke is out of the question for buck shot, what about the carlson's mid range blackcloud? Can I shoot buck shot though it with out scratching or even having it blow up in my face?

What size buck shot? and shell size? I think the Dead coyote rounds hevi shot, and choke tube are #4 buck shot and the choke is similar to a turkey choke....I haven't used my #1 buck shot through my turkey choke but did use some #4...

Yes check the threads on the choke and the barrel for grime.

Your gun should have come with a choke/thread combo tool. Use it to clean up those threads then put some Never Seize on the threads.
Any choke 'full' or less will shoot any buckshot. Your mid range BC choke will work just fine. I wouldn't use the turkey chokes simply because of the pellet size.

I am a crazy guy :chuckle: I use my extra full turkey tube foe buck shot. You shold see it roll a yote at 60+ yards :chuckle:

If it'll pattern, go for it.
I tried some super fast steel shot loads through one of my turkey chokes and it expanded the choke enough to make removal tough and still couldn't tame the load enough for it to be useable.
Lead compresses enough that there'd be no worries shooting buckshot.

Yeah thats the ticket! If you are shooting lead you can get away with it, most of the time. BUT if you are shooting steel or steel plated buck shot "which 90%+ of the turkey chokes say DO NOT use steel" then you could have some problems :yike:

Oh and i checked the threads of the barrel. they are fine, my carlson and my turkey choke fit fine. the modified is getting pinched before the threads are close to touching, might of got bent.
