I am planning a Kenai trip for late July. I'm planning one day for halibut. Does anyone have a recommendation on a good halibut charter out of Ninilchik? I have driven to Homer in the past, but was thinking I would try Ninilchik this time and save some driving. Any info would be appreciated.

I fished out of Ninilchik with Fishward Bound Adventures theis past spring and in the past.

I went with Fish'n Fools charters. Out of Deep Creek. Had great luck.

How much did they charge you guys? i've been wanting to price a charter..

I think it was about 200 per person. But with the price of fuel now, I would say it is even higher.

I'm finding it between 210 and 250, plus the possibility of a surcharge for fuel. HOLY crap, a rental car out of Anchorage is unfrickinbelievable. I don't want to buy the damn thing...
They want a grand for 8 days on anything that will carry 3 adults, a baby, and enough luggage for 8 days. About half that is surcharges and taxes.

First thing is don't rent a car at the airport as their prices are inflated. I have a discount thru Enterprise so I too a taxi to their office in Anchorage and not at the airport and the price difference was substantial. :twocents:

Not sure if it is the same in Anchorage but in Fairbanks if you rent from a rental place that is not at the airport you save on some taxes. Not sure if that helps or not but worth checking to see if there is a place away from the airport to rent a car. :twocents:

Check out "SpinnerDave.com" They are great folks and awsome guides. They are right in Ninilchick. Prices are a bit better than most too. He has a good web site to check out. They are friends of the family. :tup:

If your not totally set on that area, I almost always ran out of Seward with "Admiral Charters" and would recommend them over any other charter I have been with. Capt. Bill Jones is the best of all of the charters for sure. Used to run with him 4 times a year. Always brought up big fish, most we let go, but we got several 100lbers ever trip.... I been on a bunch out of Homer area/Ninilchik/Deep Creek, 8 times out of 10 they are "chicken hunters" hard core. Don't get me wrong, little ones eat better, but when they are bringing a crap load of 15-20 lb babies back to the dock. 40-60 lbers are the best, IMO. The prices have gone way up through the roof, causing alot of charters to rethink running the distance for the better holes.

Saves some driving compared to Homer, and those guys usually turn north and head up towards Ninilchik anyway. I booked with a guy out of Deep Creek, only one day for halibut. I'm fishing the Kenai for 2 days for kings, and the rest of the time we'll chase whatever else we can, and dig razor clams. Still can't get over the 1000 rental car rates. I tried every possible way.. even renting away from the airport is the same. I think that time of year, they know they got you. I usually go in Sept when the rates are down.

Sounds like a good time. The last time I fished out of deep creek when it was a low tide you couldn't get a big enough weight to keep your line on the bottom during low tide change. I tell you after getting my limit of 60 clams I was sick of cleaning all those clams. But you should have a blast look forward to your pictures.

I went last year and rented an SUV from Alaska Adventure Car Rental. It was like a rent a wreck place just a couple of miles off of airport property. The car lot was not much to look at and the prices have probably gone up some, but I payed $424.56 for 6 days. We fished out of Seward and they said they would send a replacement if anything went wrong. Nothing did, car was clean, worked out OK. They also have an office in Homer and Fairbanks. Looking through old receipts, the phone is 1-877-227-0650. Might be worth asking. Have fun and good luck.

Fished Kings in the Ninilchik at the mouth and dug razor clams by the bucket full, but fished for Halibut out of Homer.

Prices have gone way up this year, Charters are around $300 - $350 out of Homer this year for real good fishing or $200 and they are flat saying we are just going out 10-15 miles and getting limits of fish 20-25 pounds. You will have fun no matter what! You should be getting the first reds around then and there will be good numbers of second run kings in as well. A good set of chest waders are a must in my opinion, hips just don't cut it.

Does anyone know if there will be silvers to chase by mid July around Kenai?

Typically not. Silvers start to trickle in the end of July through August. It will be a King and Sockeye show in mid July.

Its not that they know that they have you, these companies make money 3 months a year. If you want to keep the rental charges down come up in Sept. - May. Before memorial day and after labor day the rental rates are dirt cheap. You are coming up during the peak of the summer tourism season. The entire city of Anchorage is typically sold out of rental cars then. $1000 for an eight day rental is about average. The closer you get to the date of the trip those prices will be closer to $2000.
