Has anyone done a do it yourself Sitka Blacktail hunt in Alaska?
Looking for a relative cheap out of state hunt. Been on the internet and have found crap other than guides that charge 2 grand for a week.
If it ain't your honey hole anyone got info that you want to give away????

did a diy on montique in 89, we were able to lease a pursiene boat out of whittier, very succesful hunt, almost died couple times in a hurricane but that is a story for other time, would assume you would need seamans papers like washington law now for boat rental due to insurance, or a float plane drop and do a beach camp, plenty of space in southeast, in a boat was nice not sharing camp with a bunch of brown bears, especially kodiak, a rifle shot is a dinner bell, bears are very conditioned, sage creek forums had a few guys that have done it also, all i got my :twocents:

If $2000 includes all of you transportation, food and licensing costs, that's a fair price. I've hunted for Sitkas, but only on Kodiak. In fact our trip for 2011 is in the works. Anyway, our hunts have always been from a boat. My FIL is a Fisherman. ;) But I know of some fisherman who take guys out. They either drop you off on the beach and you set up your own camp or you can pay to have the boat, as your floating camp. I apologize, I don't know what the Captains charge. I'll make a phone call to my FIL and see if he has any contacts or additional information. Another option I've used to meet up with my FIL is rent either a Piper or Float and land on the beach or...well in the water. However, with airfair to Kodiak @ about $800, small plane $250-$700, License $80, Tags $150 per (allowed 3 on Kodiak), plus food, your getting close to that originally quoted price. I don't know if this helps in any way.
**On a side note - I'll see if I can drum up some pictures, from a past hunt. The last time we were up there. Which I think was 2005, there were 6 guys and we brought home 21 bucks, only 2 were forkies (The rest were 3-5 pointers). 2 of the men are residents and are allowed to possess, at that time, 6 total. One of the residents decided to hold out to prolong his season.....
If you can swing it I recommend the trip. Alaska is incredible and would move up there, if it held MORE elk!!

If you want to do a least expensive DIY for blacktail it's better to stay in Southern Ak. I did Kodiak last year and you get quite a bit more on additional costs. :twocents:

There are several options. You can go to Prince of Wales island which has lodging and roads to get you far away from others. You can rent a forest service cabin that you fly to from any of the bigger towns in southeast Alaska. You can find alot of places to hunt on foot from several towns.
Time of year makes a difference at to how high you can hunt.

try Zacher Bay Lodge. It is a fishing camp that becomes a hunting lodge during hunting season. Self guided and you stay in separate cabins. All you pay for is the cabin and if you want, a boat ride to different hunting areas. It is nice for the capable hunter who just wants to pay for shelter. This is on Kodiak Island.

I Hunted Zachar bay last year and watched the lodge taking people out in the morning and picking them up in the evening(depending on the tide). Its good if you are nervous about camping out with the bears but we never had any problem as we were 6 miles from the bay. Then when I did shoot my deer we packed up and headed out as when there is meat involved the bears don't run from you like they do normally.

Look at Thorne bay lodge on POW. I think it's 1100 for 7 days and they supply you with a rig to get around. Been looking at this one myself, if anyone has experience with it I would love to hear it.
