If I’m hunting geese and I have my lab with me & a coyote sneaks up on my decoys, can I legally shoot the coyote? Or would that be considered hunting with a dog?
-
That is a darn good question and I would "think" that since you aren't using the dog for that purpose that you would be fine but in the end, it probably just would end up being what kind of mood the warden and/or judge are in... :twocents:
-
I would shoot the yote and just keep it to myself.

:yeah: Don't post the story on here! :chuckle:
-
Technically it would be against the law.
-
I've asked this question to a number of wardens because I used to stop while bird hunting and call coyotes if I came across a really hot looking spot or bird hunt on the way back from a stand. All said that it was technically illegal even if the dog was on a lead while calling and would be up to the warden to issue a citation.

So what it I shoot a coyote from my yard and my dogs are outside?
-
It's less what the facts are and more what the DFW Officers may think :chuckle:
Probably best to play it safe
-
Or even another twist, what if you are upland hunting (pheasant) using dogs of course, get to be a stander at the end of a corn row and a yote busts out right at you... legal to drop it??
-
Probably not....but I would. Whoops, thought it was a pheasant.
-
Just shoot it and keep your mouth shut. A fawn or pheasant will thank you!
-
...............and don't forget, you would need a small game license to shoot the coyote too.

Well if you were hunting pheasants you would have the small game license, since it is required for pheasant hunting.

I did not know that since I don't hunt birds. Thanx.

Did you know a small game license is not required for coyotes? If you have a big game license that's all you need. But, if you want to take a bobcat if the opportunity comes up, you do need a small game license for that.

I didn't know that. I have to admit that the rules in this state sure are confusing sometimes. Makes me miss Michigan a little more but there are more bears, elk and cougars here!
