I know we have fox in the state but is there any place that there is a viable, huntable population. I don't want this to be a honey hole location give away. I have seen red fox, do we have grey fox? What about the black color phased red fox in the San Juans, can you hunt them? Are there many animals? If not hunting them in this state what area would you say is good? feel free to add pictures of fox that you have got!
thanks

We have a few along the Columbia river. Not a ton but some. There is a few black colored foxes around as well.
-
I dont know how many there are but I have seen them most every year in the blue lake . blue slide look out area in the cowiche unit. Red. Thats the only place I have seen them on a regular basis.
-
make sure you do a search on here as there are at least two big threads about them.

According to the Small Game Seasons page (66) of the Big Game pamphlet, the fox honting season closed on the 15th. And is cosed in some areas and GMUs in the state all year.

I'm up in AK this year, just thinking of future hunts. Have to have something to do when its windy outside. I've had some really good fox hunting this year in AK and if I end up back in WA I would like to pursue it more.

I've seen some near Taylor Town south of Shelton, red. All private land around there. Good luck finding a place to hunt them on San Juan, if it is legal.

I talked to WDFW four years ago and need check what area open because some place are closed. Pretty much legal. Raccoon, fox, and rabbit with hounds. Heard fox very tricky sport. It should be fun.

GMUs 407 and 410 are closed to fox hunting year around. GMU 410, on a quick look, I believe encompasses the San Juans.

Lots of grays running around in AZ
-
That one doesn't look like he's doing much running. :dunno:
I'd love to get a couple of those arctic foxes up there in AK.
-
Used to seem every now and then up at our cabin past Ashford but that was over 15 years ago. Saw one a few year back by the Quincy lakes. Saw it from the cliff above dusty, had my 22 but didn't know if fox was in season so it got to live for another day
-
I would also love to get an artic, not an easy task for me. They are in some remote country up hear. At least a long ways from where I'm at.
-
Called in a grey in ML are a few years ago. He was so much fun watching him come in we let him walk. He run quick then hide and run to the nest bush and hide took hima long time to cover 50yds darting from one sage brush clump to another.

That is really cool! If you are seeing one I would think there is a large enough population to breed. They are a cool little animal.

lots of fox on the eastside of the state
-
those 2 were shot january 2nd 2011 the black one is getting mounted. here is a mount of one i killed in november of 09 and a mostly black red fox that my buddy killed in september 2010.
-
Gorgeous animals!
-
I like the duel colored one laying on the lawn. Very beautiful mount!
-
yeah the dual colored one will make a great mount, havnt picked a pose for it yet though. i really enjoy hunting the sneaky lil buggers. the one that is mounted already ran by me one morning, the 2 on the lawn i called in and the black one i called in for a buddy. it was gorgeous. all black with silver tipped hairs and a white foot. he shot it in sept so it didnt have a very thick hide.
-
still waiting for the hide to come back from the tannery so my taxidermist can get it done!
-
Where in the hell did you find them
-
tri cities. I heard of them being in moses lake and walla walla as well. They're just really sneaky.
-
i've seen two in western whatcom county by the aluminum plant property and the south towards Conoco.
-
Seen a few in La Connor / Anacortes and San Juan Island.. lots on San juan Island but you can not kill them .. Believe me I would love to have one of those black phased ones ....
-
any ideas on how I should get that cross fox mounted boys?
-
One thing about fox, there probably isn't an easier animal to call in with a rabbit in distress call then red fox, escpecially at night. Much shorter time on stand for calling and when they come in they will be very skittish and hardly ever stand still for very long. I have called in a ton of red and grey fox back in Missouri. The greys can be treed with dogs, lots of guys run and tree them in Northern California.
I would have that one mounted in a standing alert pose to show off the great looking color, or a mid air pounce on a mouse would look cool as heck!
-
the one I have already done is standing alert so I wanna find something different. Any of you guys have pics of a fox mount you have or any of you taxidermists have done?
-

You should have it looking back with one paw up, as if its on the run.
-
i picked a mount where its coming downward toward you. itll look great! only a couple months till fox season starts back up. i cant wait!
-
Awesome job on the fox and good pick on the mount...a friend of mine has one like that he shot in North Dakota. I've yet to get one, got me a bobcat but would love one of those guys! Good luck with your season when it arrives!
-
I'll trade you a fox hunt for a bobcat hunt!
-
I would not be the one to ask about fox hunting in Washington. However, I have taken a lot in AZ. Both in competition and for a break during Javalina and Coues hunting. I say "taken" rather than "hunted" because we were usually looking for cats/Bobbies as they score better in the competitions. There were times down around the Fort Grant Penitentiary that we would wait for the fox to line up before taking a shot. Hoping to get the elusive triple! Got a number of doubles but was never able to get the triple play. Came close with the bow a few times! Offer the guards a chance to hunt with you and you can get access to some fantastic hunting close to the fences (pellet gun or bow only).
They were a pest when working cats as they show no fear and run up on you getting in your face and ruining the cat hunt. After getting bit a few times we started carrying those miniature baseball bats the Mariners give away from time to time. Those work great!

If I were going to mount one I'd have to make it realistic. That means having it trying to eat a Mike Black double reed cottontail call. I hate those little vermin!
