Title: Let the kids do some patterning today!
Post by: Birdguy on March 20, 2011, 07:42:35 PM
Took the Kids out today to enjoy a great rain free day  :IBCOOL:. Been waiting a while for a good chance to let them both squeeze of a few rounds of 3" before the season. Knowing I had this plan, I bought some different ammo for them to try out. The 1187 super magnum with undertaker choke shoots real good with the Remington Hevi-shot #6s I have been using for years but I thought I would try out a few more. I bought some Federal Premium turkey loads in #5 and #6, Fiocchi Golden Turkey in #5 and #6, and some Remington Nitro Turkey in #4 and #5 all shot at 40 yds. The results were two kids that LOVED shooting the turkey head targets  :whoo: :IBCOOL: ( I was a little concerned about the boy as he is on the smaller side, but they could not get enough). The loads performed very well but I was a little surprised by the  Fiocchi #5s, there was only 13 pellets in the kill zone, the fewest of all the loads. The Rem. Nitro #4s were next at 22 and the rest in #5 or 6s shot between 36 and 57 pellets in the kill zone. Shooting off a good by-pod really helped them out. If we can get them in front of a few birds and they shoot half this good in two weeks I should have a great story, plenty of memories and two kids HOOKED on turkey hunting. Good luck to all headed out and especially those taking kids.

We did the same thing on sunday afternoon. The fiance and her boy shot really good, but unfortunately I am in need of a tighter choke for the 20ga the .575 is not tight enough. Cant wait for the youth opener with the kid to try n get him a bird.

I am just curious. How far away are you having the kids shoot from?

I am taking my neice out this Spring for her first turkey hunt and we need to shoot again
(just more practice) and I am wondering how close and how far you are having them shoot.

Thanks

Start at 10 and work your way back. You will see what the pattern is at different yardage and also see what the kid is capable of shooting. My nephews are both good 30-40.

If your looking for loads for a 20 ga/ I would suggest you try winchesters #5 shot.. They pattern extremely well in 12 or 20 ... Iam sharing because i have spent hundreds on 20 ga shells and nothen came close to the winchesters... your have to order them out of Cabelas for the 20 but believe you will be happy you did.. let me know if anyone tries them !!!! :) :)
