Title: Thank You Blacktail 135!
Post by: grandpawrichard on March 27, 2011, 10:07:21 AM
There was only 1 Eagle watching the baby sheep over there on the Fox Road, but I got some pretty fair photos. :) The Eagle was about 100 feet away. :( I haven't had the time to get all the photos edited but here is a couple of photos for you:

We saw quite a few dead baby sheep in the field today. :( We were amazed to see a Huge amount of Golden Eagles on the ground amidst the Ewes and babies. The Eagles on the ground were feeding on carcasses of dead baby sheep. :(

So far I am just starting to edit the Eagle photos. This isn't one of my best photos. :( The Eagle was about 200 yards away, so I had to put the 1.4X extender on the 400 mm lens and then I had to Crop the daylights out of the photo to bring the Eagle and his meal in as close as I could.

Hopefully the rest of my photos are better than this one.

Dick, I really like the perched Golden. I havent seen many of them up your way in the past, mostly baldys is what I find.
I caught one hanging on the ditch bank last week, but not a good pic as I was using a point and shoot.

Figured it might be an opportunity for a photo or two. The day I was there there were 13-16 Goldens and one Baldy (sheep hunting). 1/2 mile away, on my property, there were 8 Goldens and 2 Baldys (duck hunting). Never seen so many eagles in the area before.
Today there were only 4 Goldens at the sheep pasture and 2 Baldys at my place. There is the remains of numerous lambs at the sheep pasture, one at the ditch and one in the road and others out in the field.
Did watch some coots fight over a frog. Thats the 2nd time I've seen that. Gonna have to get me a good camera someday.

Thanks guys! :) I am still very busy trying to get all of the photos edited so that I can upload them to a photo hosting site to share them with you.

We have lots of Golden Eagles up here in this area, in fact they are getting more and more numbers of them all the time. This is the First time I have ever seen so many Golden Eagles in one small area in all of my life!

A special thanks to Blacktail135 for letting me know about the field of sheep and all of the Eagles! I sure do appreciate it!

Nice pics GPR.  Hard to get good eagle shots unless you got a huge lens.  You got some great ones.  Can't wait to see the rest!

Did the eagles kill the lambs, or are they just feasting on the carcass?
You could set up and try to get a kill shot----Wow! That would be something.

quadrafire ,
I don't know if they are killing the lambs or if they are just feeding on the carcasses. All of my photos were taken with my 400 mm lens with a 1.4X tele-converter that extends the lens out to 560 mm.
Even then, some of the shots are Long distance shots that I had to crop the heck out of so that you can see the birds.

If he is it is his own fault! He has barns that he could have moved the Ewes in before they started dropping babies!

See if he would let you set up a ground blind and fire away. :chuckle: That would make for some amazing photos------Gruesome but amazing.

Yep the eagles are killing the lambs. The 2 dogs are not pets, they are guard dogs. Have heard that the owner can't even pet them.
