Post by: flinger on March 29, 2011, 01:01:59 PM
So here's the deal ,Beings that it is going to cost me $400 in gas to get to my turkey spot and home i cannot afford to do any scouting over there so i was hopeing that some of you might have some reports about turkey numbers and how it looks around Hunters /Fruitland area on the lake side. any info would be appreciated
 Thanks

I was over in that area over the weekend-birds are still in their winter mode -mostly in big flocks in the typical wintering areas and not really showing any interest in calls.  Unfortunately, most of the areas where they are congregated are down lower in the private property areas and unless you have permisson to hunt it makes it tough.  The higher roads are virtually impassable from either snow or nasty mud.  If I were in a position to only make one trip I would really be tempted to wait until a little later in the season to come over-I think it's going to be a little later than usual before they get "hot" this year.  Weather forecast over there for the next few days is not encouraging and I talked to one local just this morning (logger over there) and he told he it's the wettest year in at least 10 years. Your call, obviously, but with the price of gas I'd hate to go that far to look at birds over the top of a no tresspassing sign or spend the day getting out of a snow drift. Not trying to be discouraging, just telling you what I saw.

$400?  Are you hunting in Kansas?  :chuckle:

Seriously, that sounds a little high for an in-state trip.  If you drove 1000 miles in a 10 MPG vehicle it would cost about $400 in fuel.  Does that sound right?

The high gas prices are really going to drag down the economy, once again....good thing our country has an aggressive energy policy. :bash:

Good luck.

I have been hearing gobblers for over3 weeks in southern Stevens county. I have twice seen a single gobbler with 10 hens. He is all puffed up when ever I see them.
I have been keeping rainfall measurements since 2004. This is the wetest March in that time. With a couple days left we will beat the next wetest March by at least 25%. I started turkey hunting in 2002. There is more snow than any other year in that time. There was new snow in the hills last night and more forecast.
I don't expect to be able to get into my normal opening day places by the opener. It may be late April, all depends on the weather, but the birds will be henned up by then. Just a little different method required then.

Could be close. It's 435 miles one way from here. I usual put on over a 1000 miles when I make a trip home to Chewelah. :bash:

that is just what i am figuring as a high figure fuel budget for the trip.We will be hunting private land around Camp Neborlee pretty much right on the shores of lake roosevelt so we don't have to many concerns about high roads.

I live in Edgewood maybe you would want to split the cost of gas and we could car pool.

Yeah Ditto. Good luck on your hunt buddy. It's about 400 miles for me to get to the city, then backroads driving. Plus the fact that it's essentially 12-14hrs round trip eats up more days of driving than I have available, so I'm hunting closer to the mountains this year.

good luck tho

Yep, it's almost 800 miles round trip, and I burn quite a bit of gas while I am there.  Sounds like a carpool year.

Well, if it's closer to like the 800 mile round trip, he gets a little less than 8 mpg.  Dragging a decent sized trailer, I could see one getting that kinda rotten mpg's.
If he isn't dragging a trailer along with, his truck has some issues unless he's got a thirsty 460 cid under the hood.
By the time he threw in a scouting trip, that's roughly $160 more in fuel than last year.
It adds up.......

Its about 400 miles each way for me too.  That becomes an expensive scouting trip.

You picked about the most 'spensive place in the state to need a fuel fill up.  :(
It's the last chance for the BC crew to top off before headed across the border.
