Title: I have a 1995 mercury 15 hp need help
Post by: huntergreg on April 02, 2011, 09:29:02 PM
I just got this motor. It is a 1995 and electric start. When you start it up should it pee water out the pee hole when ever running or just when the thermostat opens? I went and put a new water pump in it and it does the same thing as it did before I changed it. Motor never gets to hot to hold your hands on it while running.

Sell it to me, probably a bad motor....J/k.  Did you check for any blockage?  A buddy of mine has to blow out the bees every year.  Mercurys take quite a bit to start peeing, because of the thermostat, 10-15 seconds.

When I pull out the thermostat and reconnect the cover it pees all the time.  :dunno:

How long has it been since it was used?  How long does it take to start peeing again?  Maybe replace the thermostat :dunno:  www.iboats.com (http://www.iboats.com)  Worth it's weight in gold

It pees about every 20 seconds or so. I was thinking the same thing with the thermostat.

It sounds to me like your thermostat is stuck and you have some kind of blockage, you should get at least some bypass. You should get water out the indicator (peehole) within 10 seconds or so and it should be a strong steady stream the whole time the engine is running. Does your motor have one pump or two?

It only has one pump. When I took the thermostat out it pees when ever running.

There should be some bypass though, it should pee with the thermostat closed. Maybe someone put the wrong one in it at some point or some other passage/hose is plugged up.

If it was me I would replace the thermostat.

It should pee constantly with the correct thermostat. Go onto iboats.com and get the correct part no. then hit ebay. best $30 spent for this situation. U can also blow air up the pee hole and see if their is a blockage?

While you're at it, check your impeller too. Had flow problems with an older model, replaced the impeller and the flow is great. Might be just that simple.

Not sure but if it was you cant tell by looking at it. When I put a new water pump into it it was all clean and no corrosion inside anywhere.

Water pump, do you mean the impeller? Did you install the rubber ends going the rite way? if they are reversed, it wont have much pressure, unless at high rpm's. would hate to see a nice motor you got go, to not enough water flow.
