that was also my belief, the new ones push the old ones off and then the new one grow like crazy depending on the mineral content in their food source

Ive seen some bucks drop in late December. I dont think the new growth pushes most muley antlers off. Maybe some that are dropping in March? You can find bucks with bloody holy pedicles and no growth for awhile.

New antler growth does not push the old ones off.
•Shedding the Antlers
When the rut is over, the pituitary gland releases prolactin, which causes testosterone levels to drop. The connection between the antlers and the pedicle weakens progressively. The actual process of shedding the antlers is relatively simple; the connection between pedicle and antler becomes weaker until the antlers drop off, first one and then the other. A protective layer skin quickly forms over the wound on the pedicle.

the bucks out on McNeil Island have been growing for about a month now. Unfortunately not allowed to take a camera out there to show their progress. cool to see the position of the ears on the different sex's of the deer. does (as pictured) have their ears "up" while the bucks, even though the horns aren't yet developed have ears "out"...
