There's two types of Golden-mantled and both look similar to a chipmunk. As for the Washington ground it lives in the Basin, mostly Douglas, Grant, and Adams counties. Looking at the few pictures I found it appears to have light spots instead of all one color like CA ground squirrels.
Washington Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus washingtoni)
Order Rodentia, Family Sciuridae
General range: Southeastern Washington and small area of Oregon in Gilliam, Morrow, and Umatilla Counties.
Range in Washington: East of Columbia River from center of state southward.
habitat: Sagebrush and grassland.
diet: Herbivore.
habits: Hiberntes.
identification: Gray; white spots; short tail with blackish tip. Total length: 18-25 cm; tail: 3-7 cm; mass: 150-280 g.
conservation: State Candidate; Federal Candidate.
Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus lateralis)
Order Rodentia, Family Sciuridae
Range in Washington: Extreme northeastern and southeastern corners of the state.
habitat: Wooded and open rocky areas.
diet: Herbivore, also fungus.
habits: Hibernates.
identification: Body stripes like chipmunks, but no head stripes. Head and shoulders coppery-red. Total length: 25-30 cm; tail: 6-12 cm; mass: 175-275 g.
Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus saturatus)
Order Rodentia, Family Sciuridae
General range: Cascades of Washington and extreme southern British Columbia.
Range in Washington: Cascades.
habitat: Wooded and open rocky areas.
diet: Herbivore, also fungus.
habits: Hibernates.
identification: Body stripes like chipmunks, but no head stripes. Upper pair of dark lines faint. Head and shoulders coppery-red. Total length: 25-30 cm; tail: 6-12 cm; mass: 175-275 g.

I think the real question here is why on earth would you waste ammo on a squirrel. :dunno:

My thoughts exactly.
-
you guys wondering about wasting ammo are totally missing out. its a blast amd great practice.

These "sage rats" have been shot for years around here. We have hundreds and hundreds of these things where I live. They are rodents and need to be controlled. I don't know what the big debate is. Oh, I know, most of you don't know what they are. They are a huge, huge problem.
-
So...kind of a side topic, but what tree squirrel is ruining my treestand hunting in spokane and stevens counties, cause if I can thin a few of them out I will. Damn boogers will not shut up! :mgun: :chuckle:

Ain't that the truth. My grandpa's property in stevens county has quite a few of them there. They've had horses break there legs in the holes. It's a blast too shoot em with the .22lr and .22mag. and cheap.
-
Well if its a eastern gray or fox you can hammer down :chuckle:
From what Ive see on washington ground squirrels is they look like the townsend and they say there only east of the Columbia and south down into Oregon. :twocents: and I see this state is looking at the townsend as threatend too :dunno: I see these every where and don't know why they would think they are threatend.

If they "whistle" to talk to each other, those are the ones. We also call them "whistle pigs". They are out from April-May to September. They go into hibernation then.

When I lived near Boise everyone called them whistle pigs too.Had a lot of fun days shooting them.
-
I sit on my deck and shoot them. Lotsa fun.

So im assuming the grey colored squirrels that you see in the orachards?sage brush country around yakima/selah are the california ground squirrel and u can hunt them? Correct me if im wrong.
-
If they have a long tail they are Cali

It works out pretty well I should have shot two coyotes today that where cruising where I normaly wack squirrels. But for some reason I let them live another day.
-
They were out hot and heavy today. 50 rounds through the Rock River out to 350 yards. Most were warning shots just to let them know I'd be back.... :chuckle:
-
If it looks like this shoot.....

Awsome thanks bone. Should get some small game heads for my bow n start knockin on peoples doors who owns orchards
-
.............they're so cute.
-
Weird critters. I shoot one, and one comes out to eat that one, and I shoot it and then one comes out to hump the one I just killed and why he is giving it to her/him, I shoot him.
-
Dang Bone you shoot a guy when he is having a little fun??
-
It was a little too kinky for my taste, so I didn't feel too bad.
-
That was the weirdest thing I found when I was hunting them in California during pig hunting breaks. They were like their own medics, trying to drag their buddies back in. Very cool, because then you had more shooting opportunities.
-
I like it when you shoot one and another stands up to see what the bang was :chuckle:
-
How can a guy tell the difference between them?
Shoot one and then compare it to the pictures in Google! Just Kidding!
-
Another good sport involves a water hose and a 12 gauge. Turn water one and commence shooting. 410 works good, but it isn't an autoloader. :chuckle:

Hwy 16 out of Emmett Idaho just past the *censored* Gulch turnoff ( sign says JAG goes to the dump) just before Firebird Raceway...suicidal road rodents would play chicken with the cars doing 70 or better (its Idaho those white signs with numbers have very little meaning) and get squashed so their buddies would race out and begin eating them and get squashed I have no idea how these damn things survive long enough to reproduce :dunno:

Just to let any arrow flingers know that the G5 small game broadhead works awsome on this little guys. At least with my monster 7.0 at 70 lbs 30 in draw. at 30 yards it picked up the dog flew a few more feet then landed in very rocky area. Best of all saved my arrow, thought for sure it would blow straight through and bust on a rock. Still blew through him but the draging of the dead dog slowed it down enough to save the arrow, at least I think.

First off I know this is an old post. But I was thinking about going ground squirrel hunting this weekend and did a search and came across this post. It says that golden mantled ground squirrels can be hunted year round with a hunting license. So I went looking through this years regs to make sure that is what it still said. But this year on page 77 in the regs it says that golden mantled ground squirrels are protected wildlife. Is this right? Or is this a mistake in the new regs? Can someone please clarify this for me. Thanks.
Here are some more pics that bone posted. Are these not ok to shoot? Or are they?

I understand that. But if you go to page 77 of this years regs it says they are protected and you can't hunt them.

When I lived in WY I shot a ton of praire dogs. We had a few towns on our property and they always had one that was on watch. I would shoot him, and they would scamper under ground and come up a few minutes later with a new watch :IBCOOL:. After a few weeks of doing this I either killed them all, or they moved
-
Its pretty common over here to see people shooting them this time of year. I dont think anyone gives much thought to it. These are not the striped ones, but google shows every darn dirt diggin machine as a Washington ground squirrel.
I guess I'll seek some clarification when the opportunity arises....
-
I think the real question here is why on earth would you waste ammo on a squirrel. :dunno:
Because squirrels are DELICIOUS!!! Well not sure about the ground squirrels but the tree squirrels are awesome.

Nobody is gonna care except a treehugger!
