Being a Pennsylvania boy I always thought whitetail where the best eating but I must tell ya I love blacktail ...not the ones shot in the rut but early bow season they are the best .....The taste of that meat makes my mouth water and as a matter of fact I think I tose a nice long backstrap on the BQ TONIGHT .. and all I do is rub olive oil all over it season it with garlic - italian seasoning - pepper and BQ IT AND I MEAN SON IT WILL TEAR YOUR FACE OFF .... HAHAHAHAHAHA YEAH I am always extreme !! Sorry about that !!!!!!
-
Whitetail, Mule deer then these moss eating blacktails :chuckle:
-
Blacktail, specifically Sitka blacktail put all others to shame, IMHO! :twocents:
-
Hell that moss is good seasoning THEN ....HAHAHA
-
I like those whitetail that live in the crop fields their whole life. Taste good.
-
These Idaho WT's have been pretty damn delicious! Muley and BT are a wash. :dunno:
-
Whitetails all the way! Too bad they dont have as much meat as a mulie does!
-
Dead ones, the live ones fight too much.
-
I have had whitetail from SE and NE Washington. Mulies from the sand dunes, waterville and the Glacier Peak Wilderness. But, IMO nothing is better then a SW Washington Blacktail...Very mild and succulent.
I have always been fortunate to have one shot kills on relaxed animals. No endorphins pumping in there bodies. With the Blacktail they are Gutted and hung within 1/2 hour. I let cool down overnight and cut and wrap the next day...

They all taste good as long as they're not shot during the rut or soon after.
-
And if they are taken care of properly. There is nothing that tastes worse than a buck that has been riding around in the back of a truck all day with the hide on in 70 degree weather. :puke:

Yeah no kidding. I really don't get why people do that. That is probably the number one reason a lot of people don't like the taste of wild game.

I've never tasted a bad deer.I do all the processing my self and i won't add any other meat to it.If i wanted it to taste like pork or beef .I would just eat pork or beef.
-
The one in my freezer next to the vegetables waiting to be cooked!
-
grain fed whitetails are hard to beat imo.
-
Alfalfa-fed mule deer are pretty darn tasty.
-
Its hard to beat a clover/corn feed Pennsylvania whitetail. I have shot and ate quite a few of those PA deer. I guess they are still my favorite, but the Whitetail and Muleys in Oregon/Washington eat about the same to me!
-
Whitetail
-
I LOVE me some Mule deer! Dont know if its the high protien grass, from the elevation?
-
Corn and Soy Bean fed whitetails from my place in Missouri. Nothing better.
-
I wonder how corn and soy bean fed blacktails would taste. I have some grain corn and soy bean seeds to plant for the local critters this spring.
-
-I like Mule Deer!
-
Never had the chance to chew on muleys although a muley hunt is on the top of my list for a "dream hunt". Between whitetail and black tail, i'd go with the black tail for the most part...although that farm crop white tail doe my cousin took last year was one tasty critter!
-
Whichever one I have cut up.
-
My 2008 mule deer was our best tasting deer to date, I've had whitetail & blacktail but the mule deer was the best. I attributed it to my best meat care so far, never really thought about different species tasting different. I had shot him when he was calm with my bow & he bled out in about 15 seconds, I had him quartered , down the mountain & on ice cooling in 2 hours. Tasted great ! We actually fed hamburger to lots of family & friends & no one ever knew the difference. First time for that. I shot him up in the Bumping , maybe he ate better all spring down low ? Out of meat now & need another this year. Mike

Mike your right on, my blacktail this year was ridiculously good, i attribute it to the fact that he was grazing for awhile pretty much pressure free, and I thwacked him with a double lung and heart shot. from arrow impact he was down and out in less than 2-3 minutes ran about 25 feet. Had him gutted within a half hour, hanging skin off in 1.5 hours and at the butcher the next morning.
I'm out of meat now though so its time!!!!
-
Most years I would put Whitetail at the top, but this year's SW Wa. blacktail is the best ever!
-
Whitetail or Mule Deer......
As long as they are grain fed.
-
I think they spell it differently.
-
Drop an e and add an a? :chuckle:
-
Thats why I have always loved bow hunting .. early season deer are awesome ..does not matter which one neither .... as long as its a quick kill not one gut shot and chased 3 miles ..... :chuckle:
-
the one in my freezer
-
I have found that the best tasting are the ones that are garden fed, regardless where its from. It never seemed to matter which type of deer it was, if it was eating up our garden during the year, and someone in the family shot it, It has always been the best tasting.
Maybe the satisfaction of getting rid of the pest and the fact that we fed it had something to do with how good it taste.
-
Sept grain fed whiteys
-
Her name is Bambi. :chuckle: :chuckle:
Oh wait., wrong thread... sorry ..
-
Any age blacktail for me will do the trick... High country mule deer.... Wt is jerky, burger, sausage, ect.... As long as it's mixed with something....
