Title: Mounting a scope on a 30-30 and keep my iron sights
Post by: Red Leg on May 05, 2011, 06:33:55 PM
Any suggestions on a place in the Tacoma area that would mount a scope on my 30-30 winchester.  Is there a way to mount it over the iron sights, that way I can aim and shoot under the scope or use the scope to shoot.
Are there any problems with this setup, can this be done.

Yes it can be done see through rings are availible, BUT they raise the scope so hight that it is difficult to use the scope.  A better selution is to mount a low power scope such as a 1x4x20mm very low and use it on 1x for close in work and then just crank it up for longer shots.  there isn't much need for more than a 4x scope on a 30-30.  With it mounted low your eye will line up with the scope when you throw the gun to your shoulder.

If you really feel that you have to have the iron sights availible to you you can use Low Weaver ring or Warn QD ring and remove the scope if conditions call for iron sights.  There are also old Weaver Pivot Mounts availible on ebay that let you swing the scope out of the way  if needed.

If you must, get rid of the iron sights and just use the scope. Like a 2X or 2.5, mounted very low. I assume you have an angle eject winchester.

You can't just mount a scope over the iron sights since the gun ejects cartridges out of the top.  As far as I know, I could be wrong, you have to use a side mount to the left of the centerline.

Here are a couple of pics of a 30's vintage rifle and weaver scope.

Unless it's an angle eject, I guess.

Thanks for the Replys.

Rifle ejects from the top.

If a scope where mounted high enough above the iron sights to still use and forward enough to allow the ejected round.

Anyone ever try that, can it be zeroed and shot that way with a scope, or would the scope be to forward to really see through it.

you can use a flip over side mount also to keep the scope center, just have to flip it over before cycling any rounds.
or use a scout style long eye relief pistol scope on a forward mount.

My 30-30 is a top eject and I use the side mount scope. Works well for me but took a little bit to get use to and I was able to keep the iron sights. I had Welcher's in Tacoma put it on for me, had to order the parts in but only took about a week. The only issue is that the adjustments are backwards so you need to keep that in mind when sighting it in.
