I am new to the Yakima valley area and was wondering if elk sheds can still be found up at Oak Creek or does it get cleaned out pretty good on the May 1st opener.

:hello:
i can't answer that question, but just saying hi, and welcome to the site.. :hello:

To answer your question its pretty much cleaned out. There were people camping out the day before and from what I heard there was over 400 people waiting for the gates to open. So if you go you might get lucky but more than likely you're not going to find anything.

Of course all the easy ones, the low hanging fruit, are gone, but a horn hunter might still find one in the timber or thick brush. Go up and look around, learn the country, see where the elk hang out in the spring and you might have a productive day next year when the opener is on a Tuesday. In past years I have found sheds on Memorial weekend while hunting the feed lot zones.

Welcome to Yakima :)

I agree with Hunterofelk. I was surprised to see a couple guys walking out with last year’s sheds. Also some of the elk were still packing on May 1st, so go get some! :o
