Earlier this year, I had talked to my brother about doing a spring bear hunt in SE Alaska. He is a resident there and we started the planning process. The most difficult thing with spring bear hunting is timing. If you come too early, you may not see any bear.....but the ones you do see should all have great coats. If you come late, lots of bear but lots of rubs. In the end, we ended up just picking a date that we thought would be about right. I've hunted black bear up here before around this time and can say that this years spring appears to be 3 weeks behind. Some of the same areas in years past had 2 feet tall grass on the beach and today their might be 5 inches.
Anyway, this is the second brown bear tag I've ever purchased. Tag and licence put a guy back $585 plus your airfare. The one good thing is that if your tag goes unpunched, you can come back in the fall or use it for anything of equal or lesser value which is nice. So....I got the time off of work, came up here a few days early to get everything ready. We bought our tags, registered for the areas we were going to hunt and loaded his boat to the hilt with just about everything you could imagine. Crab pots, shrimp pots, propane, food, rifles, my bow, pack frames, raft and of course a little Alaskan Amber.
We left the harbor Saturday afternoon and started on our way glassing the beaches the whole way but no bear were to be seen. Caught a meal plus worth of crab in about half an hour and looked forward to the days to come. Weather was beautiful! (more to come, got to see if I can find a way to download pics, I don't have the normal cord with me from my phone...)
stay tuned.

Come on, hurry up! I like the beginning!!

This thread is going to be picture heavy (you've been warned :chuckle:)
As I said, BEAUTIFUL weather and here are some pics as we left the harbor.

The amount of scenery that Alaska has to offer is stunning. It keeps me coming back time and time again. I saw whales, bear, sea otters, mountain goats and even a moose. I'm not sure I'd want to deal with that much rain or the LONG winters.....Here are a some pics from the water as we went on our way out.

We holed up for the night not seeing anything but had us a crab feed. We set off for a particular area that we knew had promise but the downside was that anchoring up at this place could be a bit tricky. We get there and set off to do some hard glassing and look for tracks. Just off of the beach within the first 5 min we cut an older track that while it wasn't real big, was encouraging. Then on to glassing...

We saw a PILE of deer at this spot. I think we counted just shy of 30 in an hour and a half. We were watching them close hoping they would tip us off on a brown in the area.

I'm not sure how much ground we covered, but we didn't see ANY tracks (bear tracks) in all of our hiking and glassing that we did. We called it a night, BBQ'd a steak and called it a night.

We got up in the morning and weren't doing too much, scrambling some eggs and I look out the window only to see this guy

and another of the same bear

ALAS, we found our first brownie! Fact is that while I think I'm decent at judging black bears, these browns throw me a few curves. Our difficulty was how do we load our gear, get on the raft and get to shore without the bear on the beach right across from us knowing what is up. This bear looked good enough that I would not have hesitated. Then....you get the other ideas running through your head about whether or not you take the bow or the rifle....
Well, as it turns out, we didn't end up with too much of a choice, about the 3rd time I opened the back door of the boat, it finally had enough and bolted into the brush not to be seen again. Now the question was whether or not to stick around in this area, knowing we just saw what we thought was a decent bear (yet wondering if it was the same bear from the only track we saw in the area which wasn't real impressive). When we talked about all our options, the lack of general sign was enough for us to move on to another area.
So...
Day 1 Saturday afternoon zero bear
Day 2 Sunday zero bear
Morning of day 3 saw a bear and decided to move on....
As we left, we again started glassing the shoreline and we then found this guy
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw252%2FDirtydog_pics%2FAlaska%25202011%2F1047.jpg&hash=cfd820be6866477fd2ee3d7ac976432303a608b0)
I let him walk and notice the lack of green anywhere on the beach. This bear was eating kelp of some sorts and DID NOT appreciate me lip squeaking at him. He had no idea I was there, I took a lot of pics of him, got bored and decided to play with him some, lip squeaked and he looked my way once and bolted.
-
Later that afternoon, we were checking out a new area and saw these guys
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw252%2FDirtydog_pics%2FAlaska%25202011%2F1090.jpg&hash=aa9d7908568db64d18710f90eb0afaefefdde8ec)
To ME (and I'm not good at this) but I called this a sow and a yearling cub. We watched them for quite awhile to see if a big boar would show up....no dice. We went to another area....more and more glassing and I had my first encounter with the Alaska State Troopers (aka Johnny Law Dog :chuckle:)
It is impressive the way they just drop in on ya.....he was a real nice guy that checked our licenses and tags and did clarify something for us that frankly may have gotten us in trouble. Because my brother is a resident, I don't need to have a guide. The wording is "non-residents who hunt brown bear must be accompanied in the field by an Alaska-licensed guide or an Alaska resident 19 years or older who is within the second degree of kindred". Well......I suppose the question we had was what does "accompanied in the field" mean? We both assumed that we had to be hunting together and that he couldn't be at his house and turn me loose. This trooper let us know that if were were hunting and I said "I'll go this way, you go that and we'll meet up over there in an hour" that we would be in violation. This includes the scenario where I took a raft or a skiff to shore with him on the bigger boat to shoot a bear. He would have to be next to me or as he said "within 100 feet". Well, that ruled out one of the tactics that we may have considered trying.....so my brother made a call to a buddy and he met us the next morning where his buddy could then run the boat should we go ashore and he wouldn't have to bother anchoring up. Total bear seen Day 3 was 6.

Day 4:
Picked up a boat driver and were off to get back at it by early afternoon? We spotted a few of the same bears we've been seeing on the way to the spot we thought looked real good. The plan was to be on the beach by 4pm, play the wind and just sit and wait till dark. We came in at 4 with the high tide being at 8pm. The plan was to say out on the beach right at waters edge to not stink up the area. So we dragged (carried) our raft to the high water mark and started glassing.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw252%2FDirtydog_pics%2FAlaska%25202011%2F1116.jpg&hash=a01fa4d6b8bc05efa62502a483aa25294d176905)
That picture of my brother shows how flat this area is an how far we had to carry the raft. We were just going to keep it with us at waters edge, but if we saw a bear, we couldn't leave it as the tide was coming in.
You know how after you sit for awhile your eyes can start playing with you were everything looks like a bear/deer etc? I'm keeping an eye on the beach but really watching the brush that getting closer as the tide comes up. I'll post this picture because I think it's funny. To me it looks like a panda bears head..... :chuckle:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw252%2FDirtydog_pics%2FAlaska%25202011%2F1118-1.jpg&hash=2843a358eb9b33aeae523d48f646d0b7dfc14f23)
After a few hours, we spotted the biggest bear in Alaska! Well, that may be a stretch but you could see the bear on the beach with the naked eye close to 2 miles away. We both looked at this bear in the binos and to me it looked like a bison walking down the beach. Amazingly impressive. We were coming up with a plan and even started that way for 75 yards when we decided it better to stay put. That was a LONG ways off and the bear was walking the other way. The wind was good, but we would have it at our backs the whole time should we never catch him. It helped that while were were discussing he went back into the brush......so....back to sitting and watching.

It was getting late approximately 8:45 (and it gets dark around 9:30). We had not seen anything except way off on the beaches where we passed coming in. We decided to walk 400 yards into the wind where another creek came out and watch for 15 min then work our way back to the raft by dark. Our original location was on a bit of a point where we could see shoreline on one side and a small bay on the other. We could see several deer 200-400 yards from us feeding and they were quite content. We kept hoping for the to raise their heads....tipping us off....no dice.
So we head up wind, cross a creek and there is a big flat on the other side maybe 500X500 yards. I glassed it and then focused my attention to the mouth of the creek. My brother 30 seconds later glasses the same area and says, "Bear just came out of the woods". I almost didn't believe him as I just glassed it....but sure enough. There he was walking and feeding but spending more time walking. My brother said when he stepped out he looked good, swaying his front shoulders like a big bear does walking pigeon toed. I told him....alright, let's pretend, we'll put a stalk on this guy and get a better look.
There was a small nob on this flat that would make for good cover if we could get behind it. All we had to do is cover about 60 yards and we would be completely out of sight of him. He had picked his head up a few times but not in alarm, just doing his thing. We got behind the high point and closed the distance. We stop and I peek around to get a range.....277 yards. (I think I forgot to mention that on this evening I was talked into leaving the bow on the boat)
So we keep working our way towards this guy and he is looking decent. Not like a monster, but solid. I think we got to just about 200 yards and I told my brother that I would take this bear. I was carrying his 338 Sendaro Ultra Mag. I laid my pack frame sideways for a rest but it was too tall so I had my brother lean it back towards me at a 45 degree angle. Ahhh...perfect (and he was doing a good job holding it steady). All was fine and good but at this point the bear turn and starts walking dead away.........and keep walking, and walking. All I have is a little bear tail in my scope as I wait for him to turn.
I'm going to guess that he walked 50 yards or so then quartered away to his left. I settle the crosshairs and touch off.
I can say that he didn't appreciate that too much. His back feet came 4-6 inches off the ground and his front feet came 15-18 inches off the ground as he threw his head down, and did a buck/jump. While I don't think he had any idea we were there, it just so happened that he jumped and then here he come.....wide open, right at us.
I load another round and am starting to settle on him for a second shot while my brother still holding the pack, doesn't like the idea of this bear coming hard at us, drops the pack and picks up his 45-70. So I go from laying on my belly to taking a knee and he touches off, I get the bear in my scope who is now no longer running right at us but to our right and give him one more. He shoots a second time and I send my third. When I shot, that bear went completely limp and skidded on his belly and face for 10 feet ending up maybe 10 yards from the brush. I had thought I led him too much at first. I remember kicking myself that this was no coyote and probably didn't require the same lead. While I was happy to have a bear down, I thought I head shot him the way he went down. With light not on long supply, we watched him for 20 seconds or so and went up to take a better looksie of what we had.
As we were walking up, this bear started getting smaller. Then a bit smaller, then a bit bigger. It was cool! Here is the "as he lays" pic. Many of my pictures were real dark and I had to lighten them up. This pic looks like he had a rub mark on his backside, but that is not the case.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw252%2FDirtydog_pics%2FAlaska%25202011%2F1121.jpg&hash=4c5bba93665c159b2639db2bdd8fa1cc7acbcae7)
I don't know how to put in type how cool of a hunt this was. To be in Alaska is awesome enough, to hunt with loved ones is tough to beat, and to kill a brown bear in Alaska with loved ones is just top notch! While I did want to get one with my bow, that is of no regret. Talk about cloud 9! I was quite glad this bear died on the beach. If he had made it into the brush, we would have had to wait till morning and well.....things are a bit more precarious in there ;)
-
Congratulations!!! Looks like a kick-ass time. Great pics and story.

I know that that last pick looks like a big black bear. he was dark with a dandy of a hide. Now I'm going to just flood you with a few pics...just because... :chuckle:

Thats awesome, you had me going with the first picture, I was like um .... thats a black bear :chuckle: Awesome Bear man, congrats and great story and pictures!
-
So we did a "fast" skin job, finishing up with headlamps only for me to realize I lost my rangefinder. I ran back to where I did the shooting from and was lucky enough to find it. After we had the hide off, I opened him up curious to what happened on his insides. The first shot took off the top of the heart. I will say that those 240 gr accubonds didn't do crap for expanding....but never the less, they did the job. We still can't quite figure out exactly what happened as we did a quick count of bullet holes in him and replaying in our minds how it went down. My brother did hit his bear across the top of the hips, not enough to cut meat or even membrane but did make a nice slice in the hide. I guess I'll have to ask Michelle where all the holes are later as he is in a big freezer right now. There is some discussion between my brother and I where my last shot went. Whether or not it was coincidental that he piled up and he just ran out of blood? While I don't think so I suppose it's possible. Most heart shot animals will thrash some after they do down, this dude was done and never twitched.
I did learn a few things, my favorite is that if you leave a brown bear skull in the back yard in Alaska that the ravens do a great job of picking it clean :chuckle:
Anyway, we loaded him up on our pack walked 1/2 mile back to the beach (tide was going out) set him down, went and got the raft and headed on in. We had more beautiful weather and more scenery all the way back. We were hoping to pick up a black bear for my brother on the way in but his work is just starting to take off and he was looking to get back.
We did have these guys play with us for quite awhile. We actually both leaned over the front of the boat and while I tried and was unsuccessful, my brother was able to touch one! Way cool!

That is so friggin awesome. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this hunt with us. What a great looking bear!!!! Congrats!
-
That is awesome Gringo. I spent 5 summers in Sitka and only got to hunt deer one time while I was there. I would see bears constantly while heading out to take people fishing every day. Someday I plan on doing what you just did, it sounds like a blast! There really is something special about being one on one with those guys on a remote beach in SE AK, it really takes you back in time...
-
Oh...I forgot to mention....that bear measured about 7'6. When we got it sealed the sealer said he guessed it to be between 12-15 years old. He said in a year or so I would get the official info back.
-
Very nice. How about skull measured Q I am curious

Today we had some time to kill and went for a hike. I know a spot with a few goats and I wanted to get some pics. We saw 3 of em on a rocky ledge and hiked about 2.5 hours around on them to see how close we could get. I come off the point of rocks.......very steep and a bit dicey only to find all 3 goats bedded straight below us 10 yards away. Way cool, I'll sort through the 60 or so pics I took and post a few more tomorrow.
-
Wow! Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, the photos were great. Nice bear too!
-
Thanks for sharing, Lots of pictures is good. :)
-
Gringo, Great write up and pics of your adventure. Thanks for sharing. I know some people think that posting pics and stories is just for guys who like to brag but in reality its guys/gals who like to share what and where they have been with those of us who enjoy seeing it. Thanks again and congrats. nwhunter

Thought I'd share a few more pics from the hike we went on.

Then we went to see how close to some goats we spotted. I've always wanted some upclose pics. We about stepped on em. I like this pic. It is of them 10 yards below us still sleeping.

Great bear hunt! I'm really jealous of the goat pics! Everytime I get close enough for a great picture of some, either I don't have my camera out yet, or I screw up the stalk, or just don't get a good shot.
-
Very cool Gringo, great hunt update, love all the pics. Congrats
-
Very impressed. Excellent trophy. Excellent photos. Excellent write up. Thanks for sharing with us all!

Great bear! Thanks for posting, really enjoyed all the pictures.

Digging up bones here. It's been a year and the recent bear posts make me relive this story a bit more.
FYI,
I did get my results back from Alaska Fish and Game. This bear was 6 years old, skull legnth was 15.19 inches and had a width of 8 inches. Total size 23.19.
The average age of bears taken by hunters during the regulatory year 2010 was 8.75 years. The average skull size of bears taken by hunters that year was 22.38 inches.
So, younger than most taken last year, but he had a bigger head. I was surprised how many bears are killed that are this small. With all of the 8-10 foot bears taken, there must be a lot of 6 footers taken as well...
-
Congrats!!!! Great story and better pics..... It was WW 3 on that guy!!!! :chuckle:

Very cool story and nice bear. I'm hopefully headn to SE Alaska in May, any pointers gringo?
I'm going for black bear, maybe brown. Any input would be awesome .Thanks
-
If you are "hopefully" going in May and "maybe brown", I'd say you haven't planned this out enough.
Send me a pm if you're seriously planning on going. I'm assuming you're aware of the brown bear regulations
