Hi I just got a smith and wesson I-bolt in 30-06
I was wondering what ammo you guys like?
I mostly plan on hunting black bear and deer with it..

Every rifle is different. What shoots well in my '06 may shoot patterns out of yours. As far as weight goes,I think 165s are the best all around choice from an '06.
Buy a few boxes of different styles and start shooting.

Rick is right on the money each gun will be a little different, my A-bolt shoots best with Sellier & Bellot and my hand loads but my Win M70 likes Remington Core-locks. :twocents:

thanks, ya buying afew boxes and trying em out was my first thought, then i saw cabelas carries 44(?) kinds of 30 06
all at near a dollar a round...I was hoping on finding something i really like with 5 boxes or less, so was gonna go with common brands and type, also kinda wondering if these "elites" or the "silver-tip" ones are worth the extra :twocents: or not ? I know its not a realistic hunting situation (usually) but Id like to play around in the 400-500 yd range just for practice so looking for decent ammo.

Generally speaking, the plastic tipped bullets are the most accurate. I've been shooting Noslers Trophy grade ammo for the last two years. I buy the 165gr Accubond load. Its very accurate in my Tikka and performed well on the elk I killed last season.
At the time Sportsmans had it for $30 a box. That was the least expensive "quality" brand ammo I ran across.
I think you're pretty optimistic thinking you'll have any selection at $20 (dollar per round) a box. I don't even think Core-Lokts or Power Points are that cheap anymore. I'd figure on $35-40 per box.

I just bought a new to me 30-06. Not having any ammo or empty brass I went to Wal mart and they have the Remington corelock for around $18.00 a box. I think they had these in 150, 165, and 180 grain. They have some of the cheap red box Federal in 150 and 180 grain for $14.00 a box.
