Title: 357 buffalo boar penatration??
Post by: HighCountryHunter88 on May 28, 2011, 11:31:22 PM
on thick skin and big bones like a black bear, would it be better to use a faster 158 grain hard cast buffalo boar bullet or a slower, but bigger 180 grain bullet of the same kind?

I say shoot your first bear this year with the 158gr and your second with the 180gr and decide which one you liked better :)

If you are planning on hunting them with it get the 180's they will have a bit more knock down.  I think a 357 is a little light for bear. I have shot deer with them. I would use at least a 44cal to hunt bears with. If you are packing it for protection as backup the 158 is a great all around bullet with plenty of punch/penetration to get job done.

What gun and what barrel length are you using? Some Buffalo Bore ammo isn't safe in all guns, so just be sure.

I always go with the heaviest hardcast bullet available if I'm just looking for penetration.

There are also 200gr rounds available in hard cast.

Are you shooting Bear with a .357 mag Handgun?   I'd go with the heavier bullet.  Lighter bullets are faster but may expand quicker too.  Not that B-Bores stuff is soft..  I use the .430gr 45-70's  to explode  'attack rocks'    Either way I'm not sure the Bear will notice the difference...

thanks for the replies guys, i carry a 4 inch taurus model m616 i carry it because its so light, buffalo bore says on thier web site that the 357 mag ammo is safe in all guns in working order, and will affect your gun no differently than other ammo, they do say that there is possible crimp jump issues in lighter alloy guns but the ammo its self is safe. with the porting on this gun recoil isnt that much different than any other 357 ive shot, plus taurus's web sight recomends max of 158 grain with something like1450 fps.

The buffalo bore 180 are heavier but have less velocicty than taurus's recomendations and im not going to be shooting these unless i really need to so i think they will be just fine,

and no i do not plan on shooting a bear with a 357 but if the situation arises i would like to have a pierce of mind.

Smart move to not shoot a whole bunch of them out of the Taurus. I had a Ti Tracker in 41mag that I would load up with 250gr hard cast bullets over a case full of H110. It was fine for a couple shots, but I wouldn't trust the gun to eat a steady diet of the heavy stuff.
