Title: Question about FFL transfer fees
Post by: cwuwildcat on May 29, 2011, 04:59:46 PM
I'm looking at a deal on 4 stripped AR lowers.  Does anyone know if the transfer fees are traditionally "per" lower or for all 4 if they come in one package?  Being later on a Sunday of a three day weekend, it's a little tough getting a hold of a local FFL to find out.  Just thought someone here might have dealt with this before, or on a multiple firearm purchase.

Oh, and is anyone by chance an FFL in the Sumner, Fife, Fed way area?

Dave

One fee for all of them.  They are just doing a background check on you.  Not registering them in your name.

With every transfer I've done, the guns were transfered into my name, just like I had purchased them. Also, the FFL holder is required to collect sales tax on the value of the items being transfered. Just something you may want to plan for.

Correct on the sales tax.  But long guns are not registered in your name.   The call in is only a backgound check.

The FFL dealer is required to do one federal form (4473) for the 4 receivers and four state forms (pistol transfer form) one for each receiver so you may have to pay extra depending on the dealer.  You have to do a pistol transfer form because in is not specified a rifle so it could be made into a pistol.

The form 4473 is filled out transfering ownership of the firearm isn't it? It has all of the purchaser's information as well as the firearms informatioin.

Each FFL determines what they want for a fee for transfers, there is no fee set by the state or the feds it is all up to the dealer. Yes you now have to pay sales tax on the transferred items.  Some dealers will give a break on multiple items and some won't. You should check around and find out what your local shops will do. Also 4473 forms are not sent to the feds or the state, they stay at the gun shop for at least five years. All the feds know from the NICS check is that you bought a gun and what kind of gun it is, (long gun, pistol, shot gun) not the exact gun you bought and no serial numbers.

:yeah:
I've done it about 25 times over the last 10 years and it all comes down to what the FFL holder will do for you in the form of what kind of deal they are willing to cut you. They  can   put multiple long guns on the same form. How much they charge is up to the individual FFL holder plus sales tax.  There's a lot of good guys out there that will cut you a deal for multiple firearms at the same time.

Even the whole sales tax thing is under debate. Many FFL's will not charge it as they are selling no product or service in the state of Washington. I know of at least two who have gone to court over this issue and the state backed down, believe it......... or not.
