Which rifle is the best for rabbit or coon? Or what kind of guns do you guys use for your hunting?
-
The one you shoot most accurately......and have developed an exceptional load for.
Now come on, you know there will be difference of opinion on THIS question....this ones better than that, that one is better than this.....
THEY ALL SHOOT QUITE WELL IF YOU PRACTICE.
Winchester
Remington
CZ
Weatherby
Even Ruger, hehe had to throw that one in! :IBCOOL:
-
Yep - for rabbit or coon I'd have to go with the last one on the list myself - the trusty ol 10/22
For coyotes I use my Escort 12ga with #4 buck, with either my MP15 (.223) or my Howa Axiom in 22-250
-
Depending on the area and the situation. I would use a shotgun or a 10/22.
-
Just wanting hear of all the different guns people use for rabbit and coon, ya know not why theres is the best just see what people use and why.
-
Sage rats, coors, rabbits my 17hmr
Coyote 12guage or .243
Saving up for a Thompson Center Predator 22-250
-
For rabbit and coon, I would choose my 7 Mag with 160 grain Nosler Accubonds. I chose this because its all I got. :)
-
22 probably not the best if your going to be hunting rabbits with beagle. can you say ricochet
defiantly no rifles with my dogs had one shot with a 20 gauge and low base steel not the best
dog did recover though
If your running rabbits with a dog do yourself a favor and get a shot gun
If not with dogs then 300 wby should be great cause you do not want a pissed off and injured rabbit on your hands :chuckle:
-
A 22 would work with dogs I mean wouldbt a shot gun ruin the meat of the rabbit anyways?

A shotgun isnt going to hurt the meat any diferent then it does a bird. Just don't be using buckshot. :twocents:

I grew up shooting rabbits with a 20 ga since most shots were running shots, either jump shooting or being chased by beagles. Snowshoes I always used a .22 or a bow with judo points and would spot and stalk for a sitting shot. Coons I've always used a .22 rifle or .22 handgun.
-
20ga or .22 is pretty much the way to go?
-
A 22 will work Im just saying that I dont care for people shooting a 22 at a rabbit when the dogs are chasing it
Like I said I had a dog shot it was not fun for me or the guy that did it or the dog im guessing especially the dog :yike:
I think if you talk to many people who hunt rabbits with beagles will tell you you want a shot gun as they are not the little slow hopping creatures that you see in the yard and along the road side at night
they flat move when the dogs are after them
-
Haha thats true. Beagle dog would you say a 20gauge semi automatic shotgun would do the trick. Why 20gauge and what brand is good?
-
You can use what ever shot gun you would like 410 20 or 12
I have a stoger over and under that I use when I started I used a Remington 1100 12 gauge
lots of my friends that go with me use 12 gauges but they use low base shells so it doesn't tear the rabbits up bad
If you want to go the cheaper route get a mossberg pump
I you want a Semi auto get a Remington 1100
Its up to you I have also used just a single shot about as cheep as you can get and if your a good shot you shouldn't need more than on shot :chuckle:
-
You've got a lot of sound advice about hunting rabbits with beagles. My wife and I, as well as ALL WHO HUNT WITH US over my dogs; use a shotgun. No rifles allowed period. My wife uses a NEF® Ladies/Youth 20ga single shot with low base 2¾" 2½ DR EQ 7/8oz #6 or 7½ shot. I use a 20ga SxS with the same loads as my wife. My grown son uses a 410 single shot w/3" 11/16oz #6. Later in the season, when hunting in the snow for hare, I use my 16ga SxS w/2¾" 2½ DR EQ 1oz #6.

This is what i use most of the time these day's the impact of the pellet is alot louder than the report .http://www.crosman.com/airguns/benjamin/BT9M22WNP (http://www.crosman.com/airguns/benjamin/BT9M22WNP) But i would love to get one of the Rogue .357's
-
rabbits and coons 22
yotes i like my 22 mag with a rem 870 12 gage and 40 cal. as back up :IBCOOL:
-
predators I usually go with 22 mag - .223 or 243 .... 22 MAG is good out to 150 yrds now that remington came out with the ballistic tip ...1 " high at 75 yrds I am on out to 150 ... love it !

The first is set up for long range "smallish" var-mints in .223, second is a .308 tack-driver, and third is my elk rifle, 300 weatherby.

Just a question I have without starting a new topic.
For rabbit what about a 22 with birdshot instead of bullets? Would that be good?

No those things don't kil worth crap!
-
they will kill if you put the barrel to it head other then that a waste. :twocents:

When we were hunting over beagles for rabbits we used 410's (my pard a Model 42, myself a Stevens SxS).
Chasing coon with dogs my pard carried a 22LR revolver and me a small SS bolt with a scope for the ones high in the tree. Paddling the lakeshore at night we used a 12ga with a light.

I like a 45-70, head-on shot. Takes care of all that messy gutting and skinning for you!

Nice looking set ups. To bad they made the bolts on the wrong side. :chuckle:

The best small game gun ever made its the Savage model 24. It is an over under rifle/shotgun. I have a 22lr 20g combo. It has killed a lot of grouse and rabbits. :twocents: They are no longer made so used is your only option and they aren't cheep. The other common combos are 22mag 20 g or 22lr 410g. I have been on the seach for a .223 12 gauge but have not found any... I want one for a predator gun... most of the .223 i've found are 20 gauge for some reason.

That sounds really cool! I wouldnt mind having something like that at all. .223/12 would be sweet or even the .22mag/20. Very cool

Those 24V's are pretty nice, with a 222/223 on the top you don't need a heavy 12ga barrel on the bottom, if the critter is past 40yrds use the rifle. Mine works with #3 Buck or #2 Hevi shot on coyotes just fine.

So what is this one here AWS? 22/20?
-
223 over 20ga, I run a weaver V-3 on it and with the 90' FOV on 1x it works for even flying birds and a 3x its an honest 200-300 yrd coyote rig.
^'ll be listing this in the classifieds soon as I picked up a Euro combo gun that is hammerless and has a set trigger for the rifle.

I'll have to keep an eye for your ad - do you know what you'll be asking for it?
