I am building my third BBQ -smoker. I have a proven design. But am considering using expanded metal. For the cooking grate this time.
Have any of you used expanded metal? If so, I am looking for any input on how they clean up. I like the idea. But they seem like a pain to clean.

I use a wire brush to clean it.
Heat it up and scrub it with a wire brush.

Does it seem to clean up as well as a grate made of rods?

Yes it does. and easyier to replace if needed.

Cool thanks for the reply.

I just bought a 4x8 sheet of expanded steel to make a cooking surface for th epig roaster I made a few years ago. Gonna make a 3 piece cooking surface for it. That way we can roast a pig, BBQ up any thing we need to after the pig comes of the spicket.

I wouldn't think it would take much more than a stiff wire brush to clean. If you can avoid doing fish on the grate, I don't think I would clean it at all. (other than the brush).
"Let the Goodness bake on the grate".
Maybe make an extra grate or two to be replaceable in case you want to do fish.

My Lang 84 super delux longneck has expanded metal grates and they work great. I also had a buddy of mine build me a hog cooking grate and he built it out of Stainless steel expanded metal, it turned out great.

Cold smoking attachment. Seems to work awesome. Plenty of smoke. And the temp. guage doesn't budge.

That is a nice looking smoker, hope you get many meals from it!
