I am sitting around making up some yarn balls and leaders. Was wondering if anyone does any variations of the old yarn ball and weather it help or hurts. I just started thinking how boring they all look and thought I would mix it up a little bit. Started throwing some high shine chenille in with the yarn, switching back and forth between yarn and polar aire, and between one color and five. Don't know how these will work out as I have usually stuck to the old stand by orange. Any tips or info? Am I just waisting material or will out of the ordinary yarn balls produce?

I've always been a fan of cerise myself. I definitely mix up colors, usually no more than 3 colors though. I have found that tying in a little bit of flash can help from time to time, I think it has made the difference more than once. My favorite combos are shrimp pink/cerise, flame/cerise, shrimp pink/white. Sometimes I throw a little smidge of chartreuse in too. Don't know if that helps, just what I've found.

Thanks 7mm. Maybe I should tone down the colors a little. I tied up a few that have so much going on it makes you dizzy just looking at them. :chuckle:
I did notice that when tying in streamer or flash material that they did not fill out as nicely. Kind of made them a little lumpier. Trying to find the middle ground now. I tried the glow bug "bling" but it seemed like after you fluffed up the ball that all of the flash was gone.

Maybe figure out a way to palmer in some polar chenielle under the yarn? :dunno: I don't fish yarn balls much but X2 on the cerisen my favorite steelhead color hands down.

The only reason I use yarnies is when the water is gin clear and I need a small unobtrusive presentation.....small yarn balls with a little scent( where allowed ) will out fish most stuff guys are throwing at them due to pure size.....There for my flash factor is down compared to what you are asking......If you happen to get any pics of some yarn balls you have tied up, Please post them as I would love to see what others are fishing....I am sure a yarn ball full of bling will fish awesome under normal water conditions, but the only time I go to them is when the water is clear.....For the most part I am a hardcore float and jig fisher, but when side drifting I use a standard corky/cheater in size 12-14 and maybe some bait......

Sorry, I got busy and haven't had a chance to finish them yet. Here's a few that I have tied with the basic trimming done. They still need some more trimming. With the different materials they require quite a bit more trimming than a typical yarnie so if any of you are thinking of making a few plan on a little more time involved than the usual.
