So what do you guys think about a Ruger 30.06?? I bought one at the McKenna Gunshop. It was a pretty good deal just to have a extra gun. What are your thoughts?
-
M77?
Great rifle, great caliber.
Approved!

Nice gun, but I would have sprung for a 300 win mag, 300 wsm or a 338 win mag if you are just using it for elk. I like a little more knock down power, just in case of an errant shot.
Dont worry though, it will still drop an elk right in its tracks. It's all about shot placement!

300 Remington Ultra Mag ain't bad either
-
Sounds like it should work great. Are you going to put glass on it or use the irons?
-
Can't go wrong with a 30.06 :twocents:

30-06 is probly the best ALL AROUND Caliber. I love my Ruger M77 in 300 win mag.
-
It will get the job done

You just can't beat a 30-06. Unless your shots are all more than 400 yards, you don't need anything else. So you say it was a good deal- how much did you pay? It was used I assume?
-
you can kill anything in this state with it... My dad will only hunt with a 30-06 and swears my 300 RUM is worthless. Hell he won't even shoot it.......
30-06 is one heck of a fine gun, I started out with and old stevens in 30-06 and found it to kill everything I ever shot at it with. A big plus is you can find bullets almost anywhere. good luck

That sounds like a nice rifle. What was deal? Are you going to put optics on it?
-
I've had a tang safety M77 in 30-06 since about 1982 when I bought it new.Mine was pretty good for accuracy but then I took it to a gunsmith in P A,he free floated the barrel, glass bedded the action and adjusted the trigger. The differance is huge. The only problem is that it is very heavy !Maybe there is a Lone Wolf stock in my future

If I can make more friends then I will like it too !!! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
well done enjoy it
-
So far I have taken them with 257roy through the ultra mags and many in between.....good hits with correct for speed bullets kill elk every time....get good on that rifle and enjoy!
-
Hey thanks everyone for the compliments... I hope it will be a good gun!! I'm going to try the Iron sights out but I'm sure I'll put a nice scope on it cause I got a pretty good deal on the gun. They wanted $400.00 and I offered them $350.00 and said I'd buy a scope from them.
-
The real problem with the choice you made it that you no longer have any excuses for not getting an elk. :chuckle:
That's a great combination that should serve you well.

Cannot go wrong with an 06.
-
good pick up. that is my favorite right next to the 300 ultra mag. i bought a weatherby 30-06 last year it shoots good. but not as good as the 300 ultra. have a 270 wsm as well for deer.
-
Great elk cartridge! My personal favorite outa the -06 is a 180gr Accubond..
Enjoy!

My fiance shot her first elk last year with a 270 wsm and it dropped him in his tracks at 150 yards. I was very impressed, but I still prefer any of the 30 caliber magnums to the 270 wsm and 30-06. Lets not forget that the 308, 7mm wsm and 7mm mag are also excellent elk rifles.

Good choice.
-
you can get a pretty good peep sight that attaches to the rear scope mount dovetail on that rifle

Great Choice! The 30-06 is probably my favorite. A Ruger m77 is a great shooting rifle that will give you a lifetime of service!
-
 Nice rifle, it will do the job great.

Ultra mags are over rated! Jk ; ) I have never understood why the ammo is so expensive, you would think they would try to keep it cheaper than a 338 win mag so people wouldn't opt for that instead.
On the main topic, best all around gun IMO you can get. If you reload, put some 180 gr partitions in it and you'll have a deadly combo for elk. I have used 165gr on deer with good luck and minimal damage on the meat. Scope it up for sure.

I used a 7mm mag before I started archery. Knocked 5 elk down with that bad boy.
