Title: Must-have ATV accessories
Post by: jackelope on June 13, 2011, 12:31:29 PM
Hey guys and gals...
I've been put in charge of finding something for my father in law for Fathers Day and for his birthday next month. It's my job every year because we share a lot of the same interests and my wife knows I'm usually good with selecting something for him...anyway...
He just bought himself a new 4 wheeler and we were thinking we should get something to go with that. I have -zero- 4 wheeler experience. It's a Polaris 550 SPortsman. Any must-have accessories you can point me towards would be great. It has a 2500# winch and the storage boxes front and rear and that's about it. He's got a trailer for it and a helmet but aside from that, I think that's about it. He just bought it a couple weeks ago and I'd be surprised if it had more than 10-12 miles on it. He'll use it for working around their little farm, some hunting use and some trail riding use(low key stuff).

Thanks guys.

The bolt on gun racks are nice, could be used for tools and such as well. They also sell handwarmers which are cool. The thumb throttle extenders help keep your thumb from cramping on longer rides.  :twocents:

A flat tire patch kit and 12 volt air compressor.  I have used mine on several occasions.  Does he have gas cans for it?

A first aid kit dedicated to the machine.

Hatchet.

Collapsible shovel that fits in the storage box would be priceless.

I always carry a small tool kit, patch kit, first aid kit and towrope on mine. The kid's bikes have the throttle extention and it really helps them out. If he's using it around his farm i'd look into a small trailer. We use ours for trails, and to move the boat and trailers around. The small trailer is awesome for hauling anything that will fit  :chuckle:

Mirrors, nobody ever thinks about them. Nice to have if you're out on a ( legal area ) forest service road. I put them on ours and it's nice. Look up www.rockymountainatv.com (http://www.rockymountainatv.com)  They have tons of stuff and has super fast shipping. Tell 'em Campmeat sent you......hahaha !!!

Forgot, If he lives where there is a lot of snow, a snowplow is nice to. I have one, but they run around $7-900 with everything. Mounting plate, push tubes and 60" plow.

On the Polaris's, they have a yellow button on the left handle bar, that you have to push to have max power in reverse, and to use four wheel drive in reverse. On ebay, you can find a kit to bypass that button, for about $10-$15. In my opinion, that is the single best mod I have made to my quad.

Is the trailer to move the ATV or to pull behind? If its farm related a pull behind is awsome. My folks use thiers that way all the time.

Either  :chuckle:  the quad can move both of them, but I was refering to a pull behind like this  is what we have http://www.atvwagon.com/800UT-X.html. (http://www.atvwagon.com/800UT-X.html.)

Snow plowing, yes, but that will be up to him to purchase. He'll be using it around their little farm, plowing, hunting, a little trail riding, etc.

He has a trailer to pull behind the ATV and one to put the ATV on to move behind his truck. He used to use his little lawn tractor for everything...the ATV is an upgrade.

I like the grip heaters. Maybe the Grip covers are better...  :dunno:
I also like the idea of some sort of gear bag for the back rack and I'm a tool whore so a tool kit sounds good.
