Title: Hunting West side.

I am looking at hunting the Clearwater unit or Wynoochie unit for elk. Are these areas any good? Never hunted on the Westside yet.

my buddie said last year on opening day of modern firearm elk it sounded like machine guns going off for about 5 minutes. then nothing for the rest of the season. i guess there was 5 legal bulls in a herd and they whiped them out in 5 minutes.

how true that is i dont know. but i can just picture that...i seen it happen in eastern washington one year with a big herd and about 9 spikes taken in 2 minutes lol

Both are jammed with hunters during the modern season. Go farther North if you want some space.

Don't forget about all the guys with running shoes on and their tag in their hand. I actually overheard a couple guys in Sportco one time talking about this practice of "tagging".

my uncle shot an elk in rimrock quite a few years back and had to guys beat him to it with 4wheelers. cut it in half and were gone before he got across the valley.

There are f-tards who will wait for a gunshot, then take off running towards that gunshot so they can place their tag on the animal before the hunter gets there. Therefor, I called it "tagging".  :)

I lost a nice mule deer that way several years ago in New Mexico.  It was at the top of a 60 degree slope of loose shale when I shot it.  I saw 4 guys descend on it while my partner and I were struggling up the slope.  We started yelling at them but by the time we got to the top there was nothing there but a pool of blood.

One of the joys of public land hunting.

My dad and his hunting partner had this happen to them in the 70's. It wasn't worth killing someone over a deer. To think there are people out there so desperate to bring something home that would endanger themselves and everyone involved for 70 lbs of meat  :dunno:

These are the same people that go fishing, get skunked and go to Safeway on their way home to buy a fish to make them look successful to the wife. I see myself being successful by enjoying the great outdoor experience by itself, it doesn't hurt that I'm pretty good at hunting and fishing too  :chuckle:

There good if you know were the Elk are. And do some serious scouting.
I've been up to the Clearwater this yr a few times and always see a ton of elk. Headed up that way this weekend to see how there movin....Like that area, rugged, tough and thick. Bring your walking shoes and be prepared for a long pack out probably if ya drop one.

I'll be there watchin those archers in Sept, then in for the kill hopefully in early Octo....

Something to keep in mind, shooting or shooting at a person over property, and that is what game is considered, opens up a couple of very nasty possibilities.

That constitutes 1st Degree Assault, which is a felony.  Think defending yourself for something like a charge of shooting a 2 point in a three point area is bad, expensive, etc?

The possibility of thousands of dollars in fines, legal fees, equipment and hunting prividleges lost for a couple years, versus many, many years  in prison, no fireams at all, and 10's of thousands of dollars for attorney fees.

The other risk is, that if they are armed as well, by firing at/on them, you have now given them legal justification to use deadly force to LEGALLY use it against you to defend themselves.

While it sucks, I just don't see a few pounds of meat or a set of horns being worth it, but maybe its just the tough talk of the internet....
