Title: Desert archery tag
Post by: ribka on June 14, 2011, 06:38:35 PM: I drew late archery Desert deer tag.

Anyone draw this tag want to share general info ?

Post by: muleracks2 on June 15, 2011, 03:29:25 PM: The Desert has a good mule deer herd that does not get over-harvested so you should do well. You will be hunting the end of the rut so the bucks will be off by themselves trying to recover from the breeding season. Plan to spot and stalk this time of year because there is only one set of eyes and they are not really very alert in early December. You might also locate a good game trail leading to and from feeding. Be prepared for a cold ground blind behind a sage brush. Good Luck and have Fun.

As anyone will preach on here; do a lot of scouting, but to follow up with this unit.... don't get too discouraged if you don't see a lot of activiy during the preseason. When my father drew the tag a few years back, he scouted the piss out of it, bu,t didn't see a whole lot until the hunt and rut started. Listen to the farmers, because they have some great advice. Be selective even if your not seeing much because you never know when that ball dragger will show his face. Good luck ;).

Post by: woodywsu on June 17, 2011, 09:23:54 AM: Great tag some years. Last year was a very tough hunt due to low temps and crunchy snow. Bring a good pair of glass and you will do just fine. Several 150 class bucks cruising the desert.

You could actually pattern the bucks as they moved to and from the alfalfa fields. They were also not as spooky. I hunted it in 1997. When I see deer during the current archery season while bird hunting, they are very jumpy from having been pressured by rifle and muzzleloader hunters, as well as all of the bird hunters.

Post by: Glockster on November 29, 2011, 02:07:03 PM: My experience with this unit is mostly from bird hunting, I did fill an antlerless tag there back in '03, but that's not much help for the post rut big buck archers.

I'd say focus on areas like the N. Potholes where there are better chances of having an encounter more conducive to archery success. There is a huge amount of willow forest that has grown up out there and one could even hang a treestand from some of them. Also the dunes in that area still have some elevation so you could get up and glass. Access is via the N. Potholes / Job Corp dike road.

Other areas I've seen deer in this time of year are the tall sage areas off the Harris Lakes (the lower end of Winchester ww about a mile before it dumps into the reservoir. You can also access the back side of the state park herd that hangs out in there. As said by previous poster, they are not much of a patternable deer this time of year.

To Thomas, the farmers are tough to approach because they get hounded all the time by bird hunters. Also most of the farmland feeding is going to occur at night and the public areas abut the fields anyway and that's where they're going to be headed for shooting hours bed time anyway. Just find places away from the shotguns and you should be fine...though the deer are prbably pretty used to shotguns out there.

ARchery in this unit would be much tougher than any of the gun hunts. Hope you drill a nice one.

He has heard of a few big bucks comming out this year but doesn't feel to comfident. They have all bee shot at great distanes and teh reports of the number of bucks seems to be down.

Hopefully he'll fill that tag join me this weekend to fill our elk tags :archery_smiley:
