Hey guys, I'm new to the site, came across it when gathering information for my upcoming Toutle hunt. It only took me 9 years of putting in to finally get drawn and am stoked about this opportunity!
Obviously, I have never hunted the Toutle area, but have hunted just about everywhere else - Lewis, Coweeman, Willapa, Winston, Skookumchuck, Ryderwood, and Boistfort. Does anyone on here have any advice as to the best places to access the Toutle area, as well as great places to find quality elk. I am most definitely going to be scouting constantly, although I hear the gates are closed almost always.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to being an avid poster on this site!

Forgot to add that is the Modern Firearm tag.
-
I have the tag too. I will send you a PM.
-
Sounds good buddy.
-
i have the tag also. cant wait. Rick

I am excited about my draws just wish I didn't waist my cow points. Oh well we will all have fun.

Nice thing about the Toutle is that the whole area is good. The bulls are not OMG HUGE, but there are a lot of them that make you stop and look. Yes, the gates are closed in most areas most of the time. But, during the MF season you should be able to get in a bit. More elk, more area and more hunters in the north. Some real dandy bulls in the south if you spend the time to scout and put miles on your boots. If you hunt hard I can not imagine not filling your tag with a real nice bull.
If you get close to the season and still have not found the bedroom of a good bull send me a PM or email. I will have been hiking the south end for about two months by then. I just might have one penned up for ya.
Congratulations! Have fun.

Thank you all for the advice. I also plan on doing a lot of scouting and hiking between now and the season. Nine years of hoping and it's finally here so I am definitely stoked!
-
I've never seen or heard of virtually every gate in the unit not being open during modern seasons. Expect wide open road access to the whole unit.
-
I agree. Gates will be open.
-
Can we scout now. Just got a map. Excited wish I could camp that's part of hunting. Rick

congats on the tags, you all will have fun.the gates are open in places. they will all close for fire danger at some point this summer.
-
You can start scouting now for sure. But, most of the bulls will not be in there fall locations until mid August. Like most men they prefer to stay clear of pregnant women. The spring feed will need to start dying off and the calfs will need to mature before they really find their fall comfort range.
-
I tried calling the hotline to see what gates were open but for reason my call wouldnt go thru.
-
hey guys, i also came across this site when reshearching the toutle. my dad also got that tag but for archery and because of the condition he is in i will be doing most of the scouting for him. where did you get a map of the roads in the toutle?
-
There are some good places to camp off Rock Creek road in the south. I think it is DNR land. Don't know if I have ever seen the Weyerhauser gate open down there, but walk-in produces real good results in archery and muzzy seasons. Cougar is not far away if you need to replenish supplies, ice and/or fuel.

RedSav couldn't be more right. It's a good area.

Got this one today sunbirds in chehalis. Rick

Is that a good map with road/trail detail?

Is that a good map with road/trail detail?
Don't get it wet, it will turn into a mess quick. It does show the roads, and numbers better than most.
-
yeah, dont get it wet. Also, the borders on the LC's are sometimes not always where they are supposed to be.

I drew the tag 2 years ago and grew up in that area, if you are gonna get any scouting in in August/Sepember you are gonna have to sneak into the unit, if the weather is dry Weyerhauser will have that place locked up tight til at least early october.
-
Does that mean the people that drew tags wont be able to hunt or just not scout??
-
Normally the weather in august and september is dry and Weyerhuser has that place shut up tight til the first week of October. I know a guy that drew the archery tag 2 out of the last 3 years and he had to sneak in to hunt let alone get into scout. When I drew the muzzleloader tag I had to sneak in to scout the week before, they did open the unit in october for hunting, but they screwed the archers.
-
Well I will do my rain dance for the first week in September.
