My brother and I drew margerat unit bull tags for archery this year. Does anybody know the best places to hunt in this unit? How big of a bull should we hold out for?

pm me and i can fill ya in. i took a 6x6 (my avatar pic) very close to the boundry of the margret. I know the area well.

I know the unit well also. PM me if you want the lowdown. one word, stay away from the roads if they open the gates this year again.

They open the gates now? Glad they didn't when I drew that tag back in 2001. Dropped my 5X four miles behind the gates by road. Luckily some bee keepers came by and gave me a ride out.
My experience back then showed me a lot of 5X5's, only a couple larger ones, and most would bugle at you easily but would not come in because they all had a few cows with them. Too many cows in the unit then, imho. Had a 4X4 tweny yrds from me within the first half hour of the season.
Good luck and have fun!

Yep, last year they opened most of the gates for the rifle hunters in November, talked to a guy that drew, it was a clusterf**k, some parties had 4 or 5 rigs helping them out, way too many people.

Do not overlook the eastside of this unit off fs rd 26. there are good trail systems that get you in there fairly easily and good numbers of elk. I drew this tag with muzzy in 2000 and deer hunt up there every year. You will see lots of elk but don't expect a 300" bull. There may be a couple but far and few between.

there is alot of 5x5 bulls in there. that seems to be the standard size, although i have seen 6 points and bigger. if i drew i would shoot the 1st symmetrical 6x 6 i saw. :twocents:
