How many of you take a spare rifle along on an elk trip? How do you keep it safe while you’re hunting?
I haven’t brought an extra along because I don’t where I could keep it when I’m off hunting. Best I could do is lock it in the truck.

NOPE cant say i have or i would ever bring a spare rifle with me, i wouldnt or couldnt trust anything beside my trusty single shot falling block, if i had to hunt with a back up rifle it would probably be a 30-30 marlin in a lever action with open sights, those guns can take a beating so you could hide it anywhere, under a stump, attach it to the underside of your rig, when you leave your pick up i guess, or just stuff it under the back seat :twocents:

We take spares with us when we go to Colorado and Idaho. Never more than an hour or two from home when hunting in state though, so we just bring the primary.

One of the reasons I carry the revolver that I do. With the loads I have now, it is comparable to a .30-30 in power (although the range is limited). But I figure it the rifle isn't ready, then maybe a revolver will be. In my past, I had scopes by Bushnell and Redfield and the fogging would get so bad that I got into situations of an unusable rifle. I replaced those scopes quickly, but figured if I found myself in a similar situation I'd still be able to 'maybe' get the animal. Since elk season in this state is only 11 days long, got to be able to hunt all of it I can.

Only when I go out of state. Then I throw in my trustee mod 94 30-30. It's small enough to hide anywhere and I feel real good shooting it.

I have my 30 06 for hunting and i bring a spare 308 that is hidden and locked up in a very remote spot, and of course i have the 9mm side arm. never really worried about it growing legs and walking away. we always have one camp clown that ends up staying behind because his Little P#C$ER hurts in the morning cause the Dummy has a hangover and does not feel well. but hey that is another story. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Primary is my 300 RUM but I always bring a couple more... .280 Rem and my trusty ol 32 Wichester Special..
Never had any issues with leaving them in camp or locking them up in the truck.... You gotta be one big ball having dude to come into a camp and steal guns during hunting season... May god help them if they do...

A 338win mag for timber and a 338 rum if something out in distance you need a big axe to chop through back of my hunting truck,when out scouting i park next to somebody in area,i would like to take more with me but it is always in back of my mind i don't want to lose them all.

Always, unless an hour or less from home. You never know. Once years ago I forgot my bullets. That was before I put them on my stock and luckily my dad was coming over the mountains and brought some. 280 are not too easy to find. And another time I accidentally after being at the range and cleaning switched bolts but luckily had the other gun along. You never know what may happen and can buy a cheaper/ older rifle and scope for a couple hundred if you are worried about it getting stolen. A trip home and back a couple hours costs about as much as a new rifle plus the time lost in the woods.
