I drew a tucannon bull tag and scouted it while i helped my buddy on the buck deer tag last year. Saw a lot of elk and some good bulls. Going to scout as much as possible but it's a long drive so probably only 3-4 trips. My best friend was down for the whole season last year and made a lot of connections so i will start with additional research there. Was wondering if anyone had any info on when the time of year the horns would be fully formed and any additional places to look. Thanks.
-
-What weapon did you draw?
-
What weapon? Not sure when the horns will be fully formed they s/b talken by Labor Day. Congrats on the Great Tag!
-
Muzzleloader. Pretty much the same time we were there for my buddy's deer tag last year. Hard to find any decent bucks, but saw a lot of elk.
-
PM sent to ya.
-
-How many points did you have to draw this tag?
-
10. I took a couple years off hunting draws around my college years when I didn't have much $. Prior to the points system I put in starting I think in 1991. So I actually have alot of years of drawing for my first wa bull tag.
-
Nice draw. Hoping to see pictures this fall. :hello:
-
My buddy's got one of the other two muzzy tags too... should be a great hunt! We'll look for you up there.
Congrats!
-
I hopefully will have some nice pics. It always feels like a slam dunk when you draw a LE permit until you realize its stll hunting. My buddy and I died in the shed last year and he did everything perfect. But we never found the bull. And MuleDeerCrazy let your buddy know that I would love company at any point (scouting, hunting, etc.) cause thats what its all about. I also am willing to share anything I know to help him on his hunt.
-
first of August the antlers will just be hardening and the size will be the same as the season, minus the velvet. The Velvet comes off around the end of august.
-
Thanks. I was hoping to get time mid august to start my scouting

Trouble finding deer in the Tuccannon? Been hunting there for over 20 years and always get our deer and even elk when we draw. The ridges off the back side of skyline drive or over by Maloney Mountain hold good elk.

He said hard time finding decent bucks. They are hard to come by. Elk in the first of October should be fun!
-
My Lord! This tag also?!! You're doomed! :chuckle:

-
ill be spike hunting the toucannon unit early archery ill let you know what i find. ill be there from sept. 5th-19th. came across lots of big bulls last year, and i have trail cam pics of one this year.
-
If I drew a Tucannon tag I would be going into the to the Tucannon Wilderness. Monster bulls there.

I feel very fortunate to get this great tag in our state and I am soo excited for this hunt. Hopefully persistence, hard work, and determination will beat too many hunts.

Thanks a lot for the offer. That would be awesome and hopefully I will be up there around that time to scout. Its going to be hard with work this year to get many scouting trips but was hoping to get one in late August and another mid September and then if I get lucky more. I would love to see the pic you have if you are interested in sharing.

My buddy had a muzzleloader deer tag and we have some spots to check out of the wilderness we saw some good bulls last year but I have heard that the wilderness also holds some incredible bulls and wanted to definitely put some boot leather in there. Especially since its only a couple miles in and I am already geared up for it.
-
he just moved in to the area arround my cam. i got pics of this same bull up to hunting season last year. I think i was able to locate him during september and he had 6-7 cows and a rag 2 point with him.i cant be posative it was him, but it was fairly close to the cam location and it looked like him.
he has come into my cam location 5 times in the last 2 weeks, a couple days he stopped in more then once. his bed is about 1/2 mi from my cam.

Great looking bull. Worthy of that tag. I hope he finishes his tops like he did his bottoms!
-
Great 2nd's and 3rd's on that guy.
-
That's a sweet looking bull. Your giving me goose bumps!
-
Ill keep you informed as best I can. The big boys mean little to me. I scout that area like crazy. I've seen better bulls in that GMU. The natives take quite a few so its hard to know what made it through last season.
And of course we all know once that rut hits you gotta locate them all over again.
-
That bull's about done growing. That pic was taken 3 days ago right?
Awesome bull.
The natives were in there at tthe end of December hunting in the snow. Booo.... We saw them driving around during my deer hunt.

Thanks, I was there last year when my buddy drew the buck muzzleloader tag at the end of September and saw some good bulls too. I had no reason to wear hunter orange during that season but after meeting the natives bragging about wounding deer and elk at 600-1000 yards after a couple cases I have never been so "pumkined up". They had a couple nice elk in camp 6's and one about 340 but said they shot a 413 "rafter bull" in lick creek.

Thanks for the heads up. When we were there last year they told us to be on the lookout for that because there were a lot of them. It's a good idea any more to bring a sidearm with you whenever you hit the woods just in case.

I know if I had a tucannon tag I wouldnt be down where they grow dope!nwhunter

LOL! I don't know where they grow it but I'm pretty sure it isnt 6 miles deep in the wilderness though.nwhunter

You'd be suprised

you might be suprised where the grows are, there using helicoptors to find and get to them. I dont ever go in the woods with out a sidearm, you never know. Anyway like i said just a heads up because there not along the road, the grows are deep and they look like row crops with water lines and all kinds of stuff. Being in the know a little, i would have my head on a swivel just in case.
-
They just got another grow up there in the last week or two (and one of the culprits). Definitely be aware. They terrace the hillside and run poly pipe from a spring or creek for watering. I stumbled across one last year up the North Touchet during elk season, but it had been harvested with dry stalks piled up everywhere. Won't be going to the same area this year!!
-
Years ago, about 20, I bow hunted the late elk season over thanksgiving up the turkey tail ridge area. Lots of elk around there back then, but the snow was wast deep where the elk were. Saw one of the biggest w/t bucks I've seen just about everyday outside of camp. He was in the crazy rut at the time, could have arrowed him more then once.

Headed for my first scouting trip on a family vacation over labor day weekend. Pretty excited!

we'll be up there! pm me what you'll be driving and if I see ya we'll stop and visit.
-
I will be in the area as well, red Duramax, smoke bug shield, chrome step bars, diamond plate bed rail caps. "mad max"
-
Would be sweet to meet other hunters. I will be driving a 2006 grey dodge 2500 with a canopy and lumber rack.
-
and i'll be in my 2002 white Pontiac Grand Pri... oh wait. that's my deer hunting car! :chuckle:
good luck guys!

i saw some nice bulls on the lick crick side of the toucannon gmu. Saw a nice 8x8 i belive... could be a 9x?. I was having trouble counting his points because everytime he turned his head i couldnt tell what i had already counted.. His tops crown like a stag, and he is very old so each tine was fairly short. i would judge him as 320-330ish. No doubt a trophy bull, but score wise for that gmu so/so.
if you would like a little more info im more then happy to offer that up to the big bull guys. pm me
-
First during my scouting trip my truck breaks down on something i had just had fixed and now im stuck working. I should be chasing rutting bulls but instead can't leave for a couple days. Argh......
-
Sorry to hear that! You'll get in them!
-
I've been so excited for soo long now. Like a kid the week before Christmas.
-
You must really love your job.
-
Nope, just can't afford to turn down work.
-
With all your great draws this year, is this your 1st hunt?
-
Yep, first hunt. Definitely time to try and get it done.
-
WOW your not hunting yet!!
-
So how did the hunt go any luck?
