I got Drawn for the Toutle Quality Bull Hunt this year with a group of 7 other members, but none of the 7 are going for the early season, I do not know hardly anything about the unit or any of the roads, I was hoping to find some insite on maybe a general area that is decent for elk activity, definately willing to put hours or days of hiking in, it is an archery tag so i will be hunting in the rut, but like most people i like to get away from everyone else for the most part. So if anyone could help me out with maybe a few pointers, tips, or any help at all that would be awesome, I have the GMU map for it but i do not have the TOPO map or anything yet..
Thank you

Welcome to the site. I will look forward to hearing the story of your successful hunt.

Sure hope so, have to learn the unit and put in some hours/days scouting before success but i am sure hoping to get something down and get some tasty elk in the freezer!!

I drew the same tag. I will be making my first trip down for scounting in a couple of weeks.

Some of you north guys should team up for scouting. Stupid gas prices are a killer. Wish some locals here drew that tag. I will try and catch up and help do some scouting next month maybe we can meet up and get know one another.

I will be up there at least once or twice a month between now and November as well.

Did a little scouting this AM. Saw two herds with a total of nine bulls. Gonna check out another area on next trip.

I did a little scouting on Friday 8-5. Went in on Rose valley road and in though the gate on 1600 road. Gate was open and they were logging in their, probably wasn't supposed to be in their so didn't go back in their very far. Did see 4 cows and one bull along side Coweeman creek as I was coming back out. After that went to Toutle and went in on road 4100, a lot of land up their, still not sure where I'll end up hunting at. I was drawn for any bull archery tag.

I went down to take another loook around. Saw three bulls together all in velvet still. One bull tried to mount the other. Was a three by, and two four bys. There was at least one other bull in the jack firs but ii couldn't get a good eye on him. All was quite no bugling as I was in there at first light.

i was up there saturday and saw a small five and a pretty good six the five was out of velvet already remember you are hunting westside not eastside meaning i know of about ten people who have drawn it in the last 6 years and all got about the same bull go there to have a fun hunt not to shoot a monster they all got 5 points that look like brothers, you will have a blast post pics when you kill! good luck!

My partner had that tag last year and got a decent size 5x5. We went in from the North end of the unit on bikes via the town of Toutle. I believe the gate is right where the river goes under the road (sorry can't recall the road number off the top of my head, but its the mainline that travels along the river). Almost any road off the mainline will put you into good hunting areas.
I will say I am surprised none of your party is going to hunt the rut. In my opinion hunting the rut (especially in a unit with a lot of bulls) is the way to go with archery.
PS do a search for Toutle and you should get quite a bit of info on places to hunt

You need way more info than I can post in a quick note. Archery season can be brutal especialy in the open North end, there will be plenty of vehicles and the Elk will be down in the river bottoms or way up high,,,,, there are plenty of areas that will have no trafic but you will work your rear end off for them..... Good Luck and Be safe!
