Skokomish River salmon fishery opens in August
with similar regulations as last year
OLYMPIA - The recreational salmon fishery on the Skokomish River will get under way Aug. 1 downstream of the Highway 106 Bridge and Aug. 2 upstream of the bridge to the Highway 101 Bridge under regulations similar to last year.
State and tribal co-managers recently reached agreement on salmon fisheries in the river after several weeks of discussions, said Pat Pattillo, salmon policy coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
Earlier this year, the state and Skokomish Tribe were unable to reach agreement on the fisheries during the annual salmon season-setting process, known as North of Falcon. Instead, the co-managers agreed to continue negotiating.
"While it took us a little longer than usual, we reached agreement on fisheries that meet conservation objectives for wild salmon and still provide meaningful opportunities for anglers," Pattillo said.
Like last year, the daily bag limit on the Skokomish will be two salmon for anglers fishing from the mouth of the river to the Highway 101 Bridge through Sept. 30. Anglers must carefully release any wild chinook salmon they catch. They also must release chum salmon through Oct. 15.
Anglers will be required to release any salmon not hooked inside the mouth and must retain the first two legal salmon they catch. In addition, single-point barbless hooks are required and a night closure and anti-snagging rule will be in effect.
Pattillo said the Skokomish River from the Highway 106 Bridge upstream to the Highway 101 Bridge will be closed to recreational fishing on designated Mondays and Tuesdays to avoid potential gear conflicts with treaty tribal fishers. Those closures are scheduled for Aug. 1, 8-9, 15-16, 22-23, 29-30 and Sept. 6.
Recreational fishing downstream of the Highway 106 Bridge will remain open seven days a week through the fishing season.

The fish eye view under that water had to look like one of those all you can eat chinese buffets!!!!
"Holy heck why did i live in the ocean when I could have stayed in this river and had all I could eat!"

I love that river, but i hat emost of the people that fish it.
I fish it with bobber and eggs, and i have never gone a day without multiple fish. I was standing in the middle of the snaggers last year pulling fish out of the hole with bobber and eggs and they said they didn't think eggs were legal to fish with on that river...
I asked them if they read the regulations, and then said i understand it is hard if you don't know how to read...

This river is my fav. I cant wait to set my hook into the back of a crome king! Their backs are the hungriest. I take that back, I cant wait to set my hook into the tail of a chrome king and drag him in backwards!

It would be nice if they charged admission to a chit-show like that. Then we wouldn't have to pay for a Discovery Pass.

But if they charge an access fee then it would be a rich mans sport and unfair to the rest of us. :chuckle:

I've fished it. A buddy buys keys from Hunter Farms for $50 apiece. It can be very productive but funk dat! No more for me! I hate the foreign language belted from one guy to the next guy in the lower hole. Then a responce all at the same time from 7 others speaking that same friggin language! It just pisses me off guys. Plus its a snag fest :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

What is the best time to fish the Skok? And what tides are the best?

In my opinion, the Skok is really streaky. One day has fish, the next could have absolutely nothing in the river. As a rule, incoming tide is better and mornings are better.
After a rain is the best also, you will have to check river flow and when the river comes back into shape itll be hot...
Ive fished the Skok the last 7 years. The last 2 years I havent done very well. It could just be my lack of skill, though. :)

I assume that this is not a good place to run a drift boat?
I would love to give this river a try. If anyone is looking to go fishing there give me a PM as I would like to learn another river.

You would assume correctly. If youd run a drift boat here, that would be the worst experience of your life.
