i drew a late chiwawa archery deer tag and i am pumped but i was wondering if anyone else on the site did ?
i am thinking about going up this weekend to scout. just really to get a lay of the land because from what i hear the bucks dont show up until the snow fly's so if some one wants to send a pm to help me out or if some one drew the same tag and just wants to compare notes after i scout this weekend it would be cool. pics and storys from this area are always welcome

I drew as well! My first draw for something with horns in 25 years. Problem with that late tag is I also drew a multi deer so not sure the tag will still be un-notched by then. If it isn't I will be up there. Scouting now for the late hunt is all about terrain scouting. The late hunt is for migrating bucks so what you see and where you see them now doesn't mean much. You want to try figuring out where these animals are going to be wintering. Then you need to figure out where they are spending their summer. Only then can you figure out the route they will be taking to travel from one to the other. That's where you are going to be hunting during that late hunt.
Make sure you have a high, medium and low altitude option as one never knows where the snow level is going to be. You will want to make friends with the biologist for that area. He/She can tell you where they winter and give you a good idea of the routes they travel. If you can find a reliable resident of that area that watches them all year even better.
Good luck! You should see some dandies on that one for sure.
If you like archery history you should call Susan St. Charles (nwarchery.com) and pick up her fathers books. Glen hunted that area a lot back in the day. At one time he had the world record from that area. For me the best part of the late Chiwawa hunt is knowing you are hunting the same blessed grounds as some of our archery forefathers. Listen for the ghosts - They're up there!!!

There was a guy on here last year that had the muzzleloader tag. If you do a search you can find his pics from last year. Congrats on your tag should be a good hunt!
-
That is my number one tag choice. There are some bruisers that hang around in there. Don't forget to post stories and pics. Oh and make sure to have chains, number one piece of gear besides your bow.

:yeah:

Damn good draw. Go over prepared with snow gear. snowshoes, chains, shovels and survival gear. Seen many people barely make it out alive from that area. It might have to do with the voices from the sky!!!!

Oh and be in shape and ready to walk thru knee deep snow or more

If you notch your tag before that hunt make sure it is a huge deer. There is no way I would waist that tag on a barely legal deer.
Lot of really nice deer in that gmu if the weather comes, which it should. The largest deer I have ever seen in the wenatchee area was in that gmy.
Great tags....Good Luck
Oh Yeah and post pics....I'm Jealous

I drew the late muzzle tag for that unit last year and killed my best buck ever. It wasnt the biggest buck that I saw but it was still a dandy. I drew the tag with ten points and it was well worth the wait. Be patient and you'll get a nice one. Good luck!

You had better believe it! I haven't taken a book blacktail in a while so I'll be spending my time chasing BT with a goal of 135 or better. If I can't find one of those I'll be completely satisfied knowing I've got the Chiwawa Late archery tag in my back pocket. Might even go traditional on that hunt in memory of my good friend St Charles.
Hopefully I can get my Dall and Mountain Caribou at the end of this month. That will take the pressure off and perhaps push my BT goal up a notch. Might even forget deer all together until December if I can get the old man bones to work in NWT. Concentrating instead on the Squaw's Toutle Bull and my second chance goat hunt in BC. Should be one heck of a year here at RAD!

Hate to ask for secret spots, but were you hunting the east or west side of that unit? I've always prefered from Maverick Saddle to the lookout, but it's been a lot of years since we've been able to hunt up there late season. And I've never been up there in real heavy snow.
-
Since that is a Dec. 1-8th tag your best bet is the east side of the unit. Should be plenty of snow up there. Be prepared for ssome hiking and glassing lots of deer to find the one you want. Good luck and congrats.

ya i will be leaving tomorrow morning its about a four hour drive but should be fun will post pics and info but i was wondering how weary are the bucks like are they still on edge or are they focused in on food :dunno:

This time of year they don't really care from my experience. Last year saw a group of 4 bucks with one masher 4 bedded right off a road, they let us get out and take a bunch of pics of them.

You should post those pics

Ill see if I can find them later, they were on my girlfriends camera. Some of the pics came out crappy, but there were some good ones.

Scout the roads and country but don't expect to see those big bucks until they migrate out of the Wilderness areas in late October or November. Learning the roads and country is important and a great way to plan your hunt. The deer will be there in Nov.

went out for a good solid day of scouting and saw some deer but was not really looking for them i was just trying to get to know the area and familiarize me self with the country and i love the area and cant wait to kill a masher i will try to get some pictures up

Wife had that tag in 2009 weird year for snow as it snowed hard and pushed most of the deer into the Entiat unit. We did see some great bucks and the rut was barely hanging on, mostly smaller bucks harassing does and the bigger bucks off by themselves. The wife tagged her best buck on the 2nd evening. Good luck! Oh and if a girl can do it you can too! :chuckle:

way to go  that is one nice deer i hope i am that luck come December 1
